A couple of days per month. Any more than that and your income will drop. They act like their doing you an arbitrary favor by allowing you to go home for a few days. Stay out two weeks or two months. They'll call you on the second day wanting to know when you'll be coming back out. They might lure you out with a long load. If you choose to stay home an extra day or simply turn your phone off, they'll have a really good load on the yard with about 15 miles on it waiting for you.
If you have any sort of family or life away from trucking they will burn you out really quick. Many will tell you "that's truckin" but in reality that's trucking with a bottom feeder.

So i contacted a recruiter, said i only have one month otr and right at 3 months local, i would need to go through their training program, which is what i expected, this is what she said 4 weeks, 2 weeks out @ 400 a week back to terminal for a couple of days and then back out for 2 more weeks @ 400 a week, then on probation for 90 days or 30000 miles on a weird sliding pay scale, when i asked about hometime she stated 7 to 10 days out then 2 days off, this is for dry van, first of all 400 a week before deductions is a slap in the face even for a new driver, second 4 weeks with a trainer for pulling a van is a bit long in my opinion.
Chime in current and former drivers as you wish with your opinion. -

Gulfport and why reefer
-
Good miles, higher pay, less trailer hunting. I run into far more unhappy dry guys than reefer guys here. Not sure if Gulfport does reefer. Memohis may be the closest reefer office near you.
-
Thanks, how long do they stay out
-
Gulfport does dry and intermodal, personally I prefer dry, less time wasted at the docks, easier to hit MPG bonus since dry trailers are more aerodynamic. The two times I couldn't find a trailer were right before my home time so I didn't mind since I could bobtail home. I'm out of Gulfport so feel free to ask any questions.

I don't sit in docks all that much. Grocery warehouses are the only ones that stick it to you for 3-6 hours. Other than that I get in and out in a timely manner. Van or reefer affecting MPG? Not so sure. I have never heard of any evidence to suggest that. I have no problems exceeding the MPG goals. Last quarter was 7.66 MPG; I posted a screen shot of it awhile back. Reefer has longer length of haul as well. I read somewhere dry averages close to 500 mile average and reefer is in the mid 700's to 800 average.
-
I was saying van was more aerodynamic than intermodal, I didn't compare reefer since they don't run reefer out of Gulfport so if he had a choice pick van since the wait times were less and the MPG would be better than intermodal.
