@ethos, you are the Hero of the Day. I shall drink tonight's adult beverage in your honor.

A short story about a doctor:

My grandfather was in his 90s. He had high blood pressure. His doctor prescribed for him a high blood pressure medicine. Pops went to the pharmacist to get his prescription. The Pharmacists came from around the counter to speak to my grandfather face to face, "Pops, don't take this stuff. It will kill you. It will knock your kidneys out and you will be on dialysis."

Pops went back to his doctor and asked him about that prescription. The doctor admitted that the medicine would cause kidney failure, but it would help his blood pressure. Pops was heated, "Which is better...a heart attack and a stroke, or kidney dialysis?"

Anyways, you cant take what a doctor says as gospel. as ol Doc may have ulterior motives.

Wouldn't work for a company that got that involved in my medical business. Been driving OTR for 10 years and I have never fallen asleep while driving, kinda insulting that a "doctor" can just claim that I need a 300 dollar sleep study that I'm sure I will fail because it is in their financial interest to do so.

This is the thing that scares me about sleep apnea. When I was with Schneider we had a guy who was over 300 pounds get put on CPAP. This guy made changes though, got down to 170, did an awesome job. Yet, he still couldn't get off the CPAP, once you are on you are on for life it seems. He hated it, said the cords constantly got wrapped around his face while sleeping and actually hurt his sleep. That is what scares me. They simply will not listen to you, you the patient have no say so. Ridiculous system we have here.

With all the stories about doctors being paid to push certain kinds of treatment it's not a stretch to imagine that the sleep clinics pay them as well. I appreciate the drink, lol, but I might beat you to it. I'm on hometime till next Wednesday.

lol, no he just kept saying "Sir, Sir let me explain" and "I have no choice" and "You can go to a different clinic but they will tell you the same" Obliviously that wasn't the case. Honestly I wanted to punch him. I felt it was justified for messing with my career.

Reminds me of my county, in 1990 they proposed at temporary 10 year increase in sales tax to pay for some infrastructure. 8 years into it they start hard selling that we as a county cannot live without this tax in two years. Come ballot time it passed to go on 'temporarily' for 50 more years.

Once you get on CPAP you cannot get off. Actually I think what will happen is they will regulate that any driver with a CDL must sleep with an air mask strapped on.

I'm getting older, plus the sedentary lifestyle of trucking has put me up to 240 pounds for my last physical. I did an amateur diet the last couple months before the phys, eating only twice a day and still do. The guy I went to said I was in great shape, nice blood pressure etc. I can only imagine going to a big name clinic would see my weight and immediately call for a sleep study which I have heard people had better luck finding a unicorn than somebody passing a sleep study.

Good point on the big name clinics. The first on was U.S Healthworks, the second was a smaller independent one. I will never make that mistake again. I mean the guy came in, looked at my ears, listened to my heart, felt my....uh manhood and then declared I needed a sleep study.

What gets me is that all these doctors assume we take naps, fall asleep, etc because of sleep apnea. Yet they work in a profession where 24+ hour shifts and rotating shifts are fairly common. So we have alot in common as far as our work schedules. Yet we all have sleep apnea and they are just hard-working life savers who deserve the benefit of the doubt every time they kill someone?
