Hail, Dipschitt! I had to rescue a driver a couple.of months back. Company said "he's a good driver, he can run your truck to get him to Alabama." So picked the dude up in Macon, GA, drove to the first rest stop across the AL line heading to Birmingham.
At the rest area, I decided to let him drive. Well, it was either that or go into violation. So we switched and Holy Moses doing backflips off a springboard with a pogo stick!!! Darned driver didn't have a clue how to shift! Redlined my poor engine, double clutching and hitting the damged clutch brake every single freaking time, MASHING gears! And he didn't have a single clue about what gear he should be in!
Now, understand that this nitwit RODE in the jump seat watchimg me shift for 2+ hours. He saw how I treat my truck, where I shift, and how smooth I try to be. Part of me thinks he did this deliberately in an attempt to destroy my rig.
Of course, I reported my experience with driver dumkopf. I also explained that unless it is a driver I KNOW PERSONALLY and trust to drive my truck, I WILL NOT rescue any more drivers. They can stay in the hotel until their own truck is done, they AIN'T destroying mine!
By the way, both the dude in question AND the company claimed he had ten years experience driving....yeah, right!
Got sent home from Schneider training, what company should I go to now?

CDL schools who train with automatics should offer half off tuition because they are only halfway training drivers.
Now I drove an auto for a few weeks, I'm not down on the auto, I'm down on the training. You can only drive an auto truck like an auto car in perfect conditions. Drivers still need to know how to up and down shift to save their own lives.
Couple examples. Coming off a steep offramp not knowing how to downshift that auto and relying on the sensors to do it for you, you're riding the brakes waiting for it to downshift. Finally it does but it skips gears and gets real aggressive. Say it's raining or say it had been snowing earlier. Or say you're real heavy. Good chance to end up past the stop sign or jackknifed in the intersection all tangled up.
How about going down a 6 percent grade for miles. Without base knowlege that auto will constantly try to upshift on you going down if you didn't know to take it out of Auto and slide it over to Manual mode.
Driving a truck ain't like driving a car in these situation and countless other situations. This is why I always say a driver should run the manual tranny for about a year before they start running autos. The worst thing for this industry is to stick drivers with brand new shiny CDL's into auto tranny trucks.albert l, TripleSix, NavigatorWife and 2 others Thank this. -

Abilene is an all auto fleet and hires students with no experience. If they hire from south florida pretty sure north Alabama won't be an issue.
That won't help your shifting but you will be gainfully employed and will have the money to pay to learn shifting with one of those 1 truck 1 day type "training" outfits.Chinatown Thanks this. -
An Automatic School strikes again.
Don't worry OP. There are several automatic companies out there.bzinger Thanks this.
