Here's some good companies that will hire you and work with you that hire from North Alabama.
    Abilene Motor Express
    Freymiller
    Magnum Ltd
    Tyson Foods

Don't be concerned about transmission type; it's not important. The companies I listed will take care of you and have you on the road in a few days.
Abilene trucks run 68mph and the others under that, but they're all good companies and you'll make good money.
@JohnBoy can fill you in on Abilene; he's a trainer there with decades of experience.

Where I am from if you take your test in an automatic then you get a restriction, so you can only drive automatics. (Indiana)

Ohio is the same way you get a restriction on your license. Where I work we really only have 10 speeds although I guess there are a few autos in the fleet, but even the brand new trucks are all 10 speeds and actually it's good because it keeps you in practice all the time and the shifter is hard to learn at first trust me it took me a while, but once you have it you have it and it's alright, it just takes practice is all. There's a learning curve, but give it sometime and practice and you'll be alright.

A lot more companies are getting auto's in, but I don't think they are worried if you can get onto another company in the future. Husband had an auto Volvo condo cruiser in 2008. He loved the auto, but he knew how to shift manuals. It sounds like these schools need to concentrate on really teaching a person how to drive and shift.

I had a Volvo I shift and loved it , also an Eaton 10 speed auto and it was great .
But as a previous poster said and I agree these things are torquey and don't know what a slick hill is or a tight loop ramp ...I see much jacknife potential here to the novice that doesent understand how to gentaly gear down .

There is an agenda at these big training companies. Train the new driver on an auto and that driver is forced to stay with mega training company for the long term because that driver cannot drive a manual at that other company which pays more. It is a retention and hamster wheel paycheck to paycheck tool to keep drivers down. Fight the auto people !!

When I pulled tankers 48 states, the company tested automatics on loan from Volvo and Freightliner. The Freightliner was a lemon and kept shutting down due to emission problems. The Volvo was a dream to drive; up & down mountains, all weather; just sit back and enjoy my coffee and XM radio and let the truck do the up shifting and down shifting. Less stress and not near as tired at the end of the day.

It's not the end of the world. Stop talking about poor training and auto-only drivers. Guy just need some more time. 2h is nothing for a non-synchronous transmission. He will get it eventually.

I agree with ya Chinatown , loved mine but I don't think the guys are getting trained on what to do on a slick ice packed road with a cross wind when they can't operate a clutch ...a 13 speed must terrify em .

    NavigatorWife and Chinatown Thank this.
