Electronics have potential to fail or misdirect . Seems like more people are using the rand macnally atlas than I thought.

Both have their place. I don't run unless I have both. Why? Not because I can't operate without one or another. But rather because just as in combat you want intel to guide you through your mission. Notice I did not say you need it to complete but guide. Semper Gumbi! Dependable- is a trick question. The road is dynamic. Road closures and construction can be updated on gps and not always current on map. GPS will send you in some odd places and through hazards. Use both not one or another.

I do both. Never rely on GPS alone. Specially in the city. I was one of those that they called a dinosaur cause I only ran map books, until was given a GPS. I had to get use to it but I still rely on in 100%. Even the new map books have there flaws, Everyone is into the electronic gadgets that the sales of map books went down, so there quality suffered also. ...,What's new........

Gps may be fine on a highway. Yet I was taught to get a grease pencil and mark the route on the windshield.

    IE
    interstate blah blah exit 39
Interstate South 5 miles exit 2
    street blah 3 miles
Look for brick building painted blue
Turn right after going past building

The other key is pretripping. Get what ever internet device and look up the route. You should be able to pre-explore the roads before you get there. Look for signage that says "no trucks". Once you learn where your going there is no need for the GPS.

The op left out option c, verbal directions (last mile). But for cross country, gps or atlas is acceptable if you know how to use them.

Both, plus if it's a new place, I'll still call for directions and match it to the gps.

Gps untill the exit then verbal or map directions. I have found gps to be really accurate but thats just me and I always cover my own ### by using everything I have to insure accurate routing
