Truck top speed has been cut back from 72 to 68 and last year down to 65. With the way their trucks are spec'd, I have seen very little improvement in fuel economy, even between 72 and 65.
Thats not the only reason companies cut top speed. Insurance companies may not want to underwrite above 65 or charge steeper premiums. Also a bigger outfit has more units which means more risk. One truck wreck can cost millions & the bigger the outfit the less choosy they can be about who they hire.
The same thing goes for backhauls. They are hard enough to come by with this outfit, but you can bet if someone from the West Coast Crybaby Click wants to get moving, He will have his gravy load while you get beep on the Quallcom saying "preplan cancelled" and a fake "yeah we're sorry, The load fell apart on us, we're looking for something" message.
OTR is a piece rate pay structure. Each driver basically competes for miles & should be proactive in doing so to protect their income & maximize their production Of course you shouldn't whine about it, but don't act like an employee contributing to a team effort because in most cases in OTR it will leave you emotionally satisfied but your wallet thin.Trucker61016 and truckguy391 Thank this. -
1. Paid short miles (Rand McNally) City to city.
2. Below average CPM pay, yet they have the nerve to call themselves a "Top Pay Carrier."
3. Slow trucks, and detuned torque and HP...the trucks are almost as slow loaded light or empty as they are fully loaded.
4. Micromanaging of fuel stops, forcing the driver to plan his/her day around saving the company a few pennies. The fuel stops usually consist of inaccessible overcrowded hellholes like Carlisle, PA. Or the Pilot in Joliet which are a major inconvenience to the driver.
5. Too much office personnel inbreeding has gone on here over the past 20 years. There are and always were a few good people there trying to help, but the good ones usually don't stick around...the majority of management and especially dispatch were and likely still are incompetent, arrogant morons.Anonymousproxy Thanks this. -
2) Regarding the backhauls I dont know how those solo reefer drivers do it. Because after delivering you have to go get a trailer washout which can be 1-4 hours depending on where you are. Ive seen lines 25-30 trucks deep at certain Blue Beacons. All that is on duty time.
Having said that I dont know how these guys drive legally. Long load times long unload times washouts- its impossible if you ask me.
I dont know too much about Halvor besides seeing their trucks on the road but is there some ELD logbook work going on behind the scenes? The authorities probably know it but turn a blind eye as what they deliver is essential- that being food.
One thing I know about Halvor is they use the super singles which I dont like. The company itself is from Wisconsin I believe.Trucker61016 Thanks this. -
