I am not saying Ham radio is pointless or not useful. I am saying collecting contacts in a 30 second contact just doesn't seem like any fun to me. I'm not a people person. Most people are not as anti-social as I am and are probably better because of it. Shortwave listening and later AM DXing was exciting to me but I was mostly interested in what was being said, not putting pins on a map. I did some AM DXing in the truck in the 1990s and then Art Bell filled every am station in the nation and there was no point in tuning around the AM band only to hear one kook with lot of static was saying on 1200 in Philly versus hearing the same kook say the kookie things from the nearby AM station. Now that most commercial shortwave broadcasters put their signal on the internet and few overseas broadcasters even aim signals at North America, I haven't even tuned a SW station in years. I have a Sony SW receiver in my bedroom but it receives almost nothing on SW.

Art Bell was a legend. Ironically also an amateur radio operator. W0BB? If I remember correctly.

I constantly turn my squelch higher than I'd like because of these ####### running high power base units. I'd love to get my hands on a couple of them and shove their mic down their throats.

I used to do a lot of AM & SW DXing too. In fact, I was just thinking about rummaging around for my old SW receiver. Maybe there's nothing there anymore though; it has been at least 10 years since I listened to it.

After my divorce and being I don’t have a ball and chain anymore, I’m gonna get me TenTec Omni D set up one of these days and get back to terrorizing the region on 3937

Find someone with sideband to prearrange conversation…side band never really got as popular as it could have…im thinning herd,,,lower unit has USB and LSB
I still have CB in truck but rarely use it as there are so few with them,,,still handy to get a heads up on road conditions/closures as those send me on a back road trail to my destination

Lot of people would kid me about the Realistic I had in my truck when I first started driving in the mid 90s. But it sure would get out and be crisp and clear too. Also had a 23 channel Johnson that I wish I hadn't let go.

The top one (trc-427) is one of the best 40-channel radios you could have if it is aligned properly.

kemosabi mentioned Johnson, they made a radio with one heck of a receive, 323a. While this is just a 23-channel radio, it was designed by people who didn't want cookie-cutter radios, they wanted performance, and it is still a better radio than the crap that came out in the past 15 years.
