My Volvo has one that I had to use now and then to reset my QualComm but never thought about your two points above. -
I got 5 years out of a lawnmower battery, that was about my best.
Car/truck - 4 years tops.
Big truck is looking like 3 years, replace before winter.
How long are batteries supposed to last? -
I had a 94 grand am for 6 years. 97 cavalier for 6 years. Have no idea when they were installed before i bought the cars. But they were sold with the same batteries. In 12 i bought a brand new 12 harley. It got a new battery the following year. My 16 FL i've been in almost a year now. Looks like they're going bad already. Shut the truck off and batteries read 13.2. 12.9 after 10 hours. When it was new the numbers were 12.8 and 12.6

I've had great luck with GM AC Delco batteries. My old Sunfire got 5 or 6 years out of the original battery and I don't believe the new owner has replaced the replacement one yet. I got 3 years out of the original battery in my Sierra. Only reason I changed was because winters here can hit -40 and I hate being the guy who needs to be boosted. My dad replaced the original battery in his Silverado after 8 years. I tried those Optima batteries in my Dodge Ram and they're junk IMO. Never had one last more than a year. I had the auto parts store replace I think 2 or 3 of them under warranty. Only plus was when they were working, they were dang near unstoppable.

Wow, you must have terrible luck with your batteries. My pickup 60 month battery was changed after 7 years of use. The 60 month battery in the commercial landscape mower lasted 12 years. The one in the wifes minivan is also a 60 month and it survived its 6th winter with little headaches.
No I dont bother to top off the cells, nothing more than keep the terminals clean when possible. I avoid using the cheap lead clamps for the battery posts whenever possible. I buy what ever battery is on sale. The one in the Pickup is a Exide, the wifes is a NAPA,, the one in the mower I believe is a Champion from Walmart.
