Hello All,
I'm hoping someone can help don't know what to do.... I've searched everywhere and since this international isn't a cookie cutter problem there doesn't seem to be much help. Helping a friend out trucks been to 2 other shops and to the dealer 10+ times all they have managed to do is throw parts at it and hope for the best no one has figured it out YET...my friend is now so deep in the truck hed have to sell it for 3x what its worth to break even.. Here goes..
2011 international prostar rollback with the maxxforce 9, my friend said the dpf light would come one then go off, truck would require a lot of parked regens, power loss these problems would come and go he finally got to the point of knowing there was a huge problem when he notice the exhaust temp light stopped coming on during regens he said it would always come one durning a regen.
1. Pulled the DPF and DOC
DPF was cracked replaced DPF and baked the DOC they said the DOC flow tested at 95% after baking
Also the DOC WAS NOT face clogged
2. Inspected the pressure senor tubes at DPF lines are not clogged
3. After putting new DPF & DOF back on test drove truck and still had no power used our scan tool to check soot level scan tool said 150% so we did a forced regen noticed the temps weren't getting above 600
4. Pulled Dozer injector the Dozer and Hole the dozer mounts through were clogged cleaned dozer and blew it out with low pressure air dozer had a cone spray like it should cleaned out the exhaust pipe the dozer mounts in
5. Did .another forced regen temps did climb but only got up to 600 6.pulled truck 1/2 in shop stood wood up against cab on both sides with the shops turbo heater blowing on front of truck it wasn't that cold outside but we needed to get the temps to at least 1000 to cook the soot with the cab blocked in and the extra heat temps got to the low 900s
7. Did 3 forced regens with cab blocked in and soot level dropped to 11% (still shouldn't have to block the cab to get the temps up)
8. Since the soot was 11% the high soot load fault code was cleared and we could now recalibrate the MAF (something they say has to be done after replacing or baking the DPF system) the scan tool failed to recalibrate the MAF said it was out of range and trigged a MAF fault code pulled the MAF and it was dirty cleaned it with special MAF cleaner put it back in
9 Tried again to recalibrate the MAF this time it completed but the soot level went from 11% to 250% durning the recalibration process only took about 9 mins
10. Was told to check the EGR valve cause soot shouldn't build that quick checked EGR values came back saying EGR was stuck open so we pulled EGR and it was stuck in had to cut it apart to get it out replaced the EGR valve and pulled dozer again the dozer itself was clogged again but not much
11. Hook truck back up checked soot level still at 250% did a forced regen temps got to 800 (cab was not blocked in) Soot only dropped to 230s after 2 regens scan tool says the dozer fuel rate is 8 psi durning regen
So very sorry for my long post but I had to give step by step in hopes of triggering a light bulb in someone's head I'm hopeful someone has had similar problems and can help me out I'm lost I think the truck hasn't had successful regens in a whole and the soot has backed up and built up but I'm not sure, When the truck runs it runs good, not coolant loss at all, only think I'm positive of at this point is its haunted Lol any help or ideas would be great thanks in advance
Why won't the temps get up to 1000 like it should?
Why did the soot level jump so high in only 10 mins?
What am I missing? (Other than sleep )

I have suggested all the above even offered to buy the fuel and light the match, he didn't find the same humor in it as I did

Maybe super engineer can help.sickntwisted Thanks this. -
Ok, chances are the turbos are coked up and this isn't producing the boost it should and it is sooting up quicker because of that. The smaller engines are sorta funny with how they handle regens. The higher the soot load, the lower the regen temps. This is by software calibration. The more soot load, the higher chance for DPF damage. So it runs a cooler regen on purpose. The thing is, if the regen doesn't hit about 850, the ECM will not start to reduce the soot load calculation and the soot load will just keep climbing higher and higher. The engine needs a bit of load. They recommend to unplug the fan solenoid so the fan is on 100% during a regen, and then you'll get those nice high temps. I have never worked with "scan tools", only International approved software, such as ServiceMaxx. When MAF recals fail and you get 11% to 250% soot loads instantly, even with a new DPF, I think your scan tool might be reading faulty. I am sorry you have bad experience at the dealer. These engines have been around long enough now. Lots of experienced good techs out there. There is also a really good After treatment diagnostic manual for these engines. Many after treatment problems start because something is wrong with the engine. The After treatment manual goes through all that too. Did anyone do that?

Maybe contact Rawze at Rawze dot com, he seems pretty good at figuring this stuff out.
Could just be an exhaust leak some where. These things are sensitive to the smallest things. Sometimes it just turns out to be a 99 cent issue causing it.sickntwisted Thanks this. -
Thanks for the replies, i may have gotten somewhere I've learned not to celebrate to quickly with an international tho so at the moment I'm not saying its 100% fixed, but after 3 sleepless nights reading and researching I decided to just start with cleaning every sensor that gets calculated into the soot level, Pulled the Manifold Intake Pressure sensor and it was clogged shut, also cleaned the Egr pressure sensor that was also clogged shut after cleaning these ran 3 forced regens and the soot started to drop quickly, after every forced regen drove the truck about 15 miles got the soot level down to 25% He has been driving and using the truck the past 2 days, The owner/operator said the truck runs like its new again and has been regening on its own, EXPECT for when the PTO light comes on on the dash he says the PTO light has been flickering on and off for about a year now, (which could be what cause the soot to back up the truck won't auto regen with the PTO light on) so now I'm gonna have to track down a wiring issue and figure out why the light will come on without the switch engaged, does anyone know if there's a common area for failure for the PTO wiring, TIA and that's again for the replies BTW We are using a Bosch scanner with dealer software, I know its still not a dealer tool but I did opt to spend the extra to get the dealer release software in hopes that in the furture I don't run into a problem with generic scanner especially since international is a picky beast
