A few cents lower, like it's .43 with Schneider intermodal.

Don't work 1099 if you're not independent. You will make less, they are paying 1099 so they can have more money in their pocket instead of paying you insurance, benifit, Workers comp etc etc

I know 5 truck drivers that work 1099 for their various reasons. One worked w2. His boss changed to 1099 and upped his percentage. He is the only one getting a somewhat fair deal. 3 truck carrier. No benefits before, none after. I bet on a good day he makes 50ish cents a mile. 2 are at .42 and run their assess off (they are EMPLOYEES of a multi truck owner op at the same company I lease to ... and they are getting hosed). One is at .38 and the other is at .36 .... both of those guys have criminal records and horrific driving records, and it is the best they can do.

Basically ... 1099 does not work for any EMPLOYEE.

I started out my trucking career with a 1099 company. Did my year and moved on. No problems. Filed taxes using per diem only paid like 6% of what i earned. Would have been way less and my tax guy said i could have gotten money back if i saved receipts. Didnt save a single one. Gotta be tough and smart though. A 1099 company can easily chew you up and spit you out if youre a dummy.

What should you be aware of?

Which way their door swings, so it don't hit you in the butt as you run out it!

    Wow. Lots to think about.

I have a clean MVR (clean for the last decade, stable work history, etc. I'm a company driver right now.

I don't know if I'm up for saving all my receipts and filing quarterly with the IRS unless the benefits are just too great to pass up.

I'm jumping ship one way or another. But I don't thing 1099 is going to be right for me.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

    Lonesome and MM71 Thank this.

Well, to be honest, this company is attractive as hell. I met with the owner. He drives too. He has enough work to keep me pre dispatched 2-3 days at a time. Paper logs and truck is not governed (not that speeding is important to me but running 70 in a 70 would be a great change.)

Pay is percentage of trucks profit.

Working flatbed with a small company just sounds so much better than continuing with a mega.

I may regret it at tax time, but I think it may be a good alternative to running with my current mega who "tries" to get me home sometime Friday and usually has me leaving out Sunday at 7:00 am.

Whatever works for you. But if at all possible try to talk to other drivers from the company and see how they like their jobs

Did the owner say why he runs his drivers on a 1099?
