After awhile, downshifting will be as automatic as upshifting. You will get to the point where you can use the engine brake and downshift all the way to an almost complete stop, even in traffic. I don't to THAT all the time, but I definitely downshift coming up to stop signs, traffic lights, road blockages such as construction - saves on the brake linings, keeps the brake drums from heating up - especially when in heavy traffic (I'm in it daily). Eventually, YOU - WILL - be an automatic transmission and you won't even have to think about it (hence the automatic transmission!).

To answer a few questions. There are no "trick" questions on the tests. They are done by the state of Missouri. You only need, general knowledge, combination vehicles and air brakes. Haz-mat and tanker are optional. The training is really laid back, and you run the entire country with your instructor. They will usually put you in the seat for about 20 hours the first week, then 30-40 the second week, and finish up your 100 hours in the 3rd week. If they are comfortable you can pass the cdl test, they take you back to Springfield and spend a couple of days on the pad perfecting the backing part of it, and some around the test they will take you on.

As for Atlanta, I really like Georgia. We went through it to Jacksonville, then back up to Atlanta for a load going into Tennessee. The loop around Atlanta is nothing but orange barrels. In fact, I think the whole state is. It is a scary place for a newbie to drive.

We have dropped in Smyrna this morning, and are heading to Lebanon to pick up a load going to NC.

    Will post some more later.

I like what your telling us about Prime. I agree with everyone else though, stay away from the lease program. My step dad got screwed by them on that one. Our truck over heated in Montana and shut down in 13 below weather. That made no sense. It was the last run anyway sense we were dropping it off and then driving back to Springfield where we had already cleaned the truck then drove into the shop handed them the key's and walked away. Back then I didn't know Prime had company driver's as all I knew it was nothing but a O/O/lease company. One thing I don't like about what you said though is the 50,000 mile part. Do you have to stay on the road the whole time to do it or do you get to go home every few week's?

As for Atlanta, yes, scary! There when it rain's it pour's as everyone put's on their flasher's and slow's WAY down. It make's no sense but ok. I really don't care as long as I am kept away from NYC and L.A. I can deal with the rest with any company.
