If you have one of these motors, and you have an occasional issue with a sticking injector, you might want to take care of it sooner rather than later!

We have guy with a DD15 that acted up once a few months ago. Very rough start, acted like one cylinder was dead. The shop was unable to track down or replicate the problem to figure out which injector caused the problem. Fast forward to this week. He had a hard time getting it to fire off, and when it did, it ran away. RPM peaked @3050, and shutting off the key had zero effect. Pulling codes showed that high rpm and low rail pressure occurred at the same time, pointing to an injector stuck open, and the runaway was due to excess fuel dumped in the cylinder.

Truck seemed to run fine afterwards, but come to find out, that kind of RPM pretty much requires cam replacement. The lobes are pressed on the shaft, and can twist on the shaft at those super-high revs. So, he basically doubled the cost of his repair by not pulling the injectors after the first incident. Bill is around $10K.

    JUST WOW.

Our service manager mother F's the DD15's at our shop. He said the most they are getting out of one is 800K, then they have to replace the " one box " / I presume it holds the DPF @ $8000. That's just the part.

This is after its all worn out and changing screens no longer works. I was talking to him the other day, getting my steer brakes adjusted. He absolutely Mother F's the Cascadia's.

He advocates Centuries with a 60.

He's lucky he didn't bork the engine. Use to be anything over 2500 rpm on a large displacement truck diesel would float the valves (valves wouldn't have time to close) and would sometimes lodge a valve in the top of a piston...but that was on older manual motors.

Yeah, these overhead cam engines have a lot less mass in the valvetrain. Figure that probably saved the engine.

I've had to put 18 injectors in a truck once until I found a set that didn't immediately dump fuel into the exhaust. They are quite the technological advancement.. -_-

I guess that problem is not injector related. that truck may have bad jake brake solenoids. There is a special bulletin about this issue.

Only problem we have come across related to jake solenoids with the DD15's is that they affect regening (other than affecting jake performance)

Yes, fixed. About 600K on mileage. Not a Jake issue, that won't cause a runaway.
