I got this a former coworker who is getting booted out of the military. His career field is overmanned and they wont let him re-up for another 4-6 years. His career field was the same as mine. Transportation.
I used to be his boss before he was forced into Dispatch. I trained him how to drive a tractor/trailer. After 250 hours of documented training (involving 5 different experienced trainers) he was a colossal failure at it since he insists that he has the right of way at all times since he is bigger than everyone else. He does NOT believe in using his mirrors (he sideswiped the barriers that are intended to slow people down at the entrance of the base gate). I never recommended him to be certified.
Trying my hardest not to bad-mouth him but some people are natural learners... He is NOT one of those.
So he is getting out and insists on wanting to use his military driving "experience" towards getting his Class A CDL. I respect his service since he did a tour in Iraq sitting on a FOB for six months dispatching base-side transportation.
He has a wife and four kids and wants something that pays similar to what he makes now before he gets booted as an E-4 (about $45K if you include all his benefits).
He lives in an area full of LTL carriers but aside from Swift, there are no other carriers in his town. He also insists on wanting daily hometime plus a full ride similar to what he has now.
I told him what his options were: Go to CDL school, use your GI Bill to get your CDL and then go from there... or go with a company sponsored training and go from there.
What personal advice should I give him from YOU guys since he doesnt believe in OTR. I already told him he would waste his GI Bill if he really wants to get a CDL. Personally I don't think he will last a week as a professional driver cause he is such a poor driver. Part of me wants to save him the heart-break. The other side of me wants to make sure he never shares the same roads as my family and friends.
Should I let him waste his money and fail or should I just let him risk it (including the safety of his fellow commuters) and hope someone out there has better instructional skills than me.
Maybe this is a bit rhetorical... But i feel not everyone should be truck driver.

if he is as bad as you're making it sound, he wont even get past DMV
he is going to do what he wants to do either way, so the hell with it, tell him to go to CDL school, a real one that doesn't cut corners.... one of those cheapo sucker ones might just find a way to sneak him thru and get him a CDL and then we're all screwed! then tell him to go western 11, so we'll be safe out here in the midwest lolJrdude5 and road_runner Thank this. -

He will have to take a road test at DMV most likely...
Some States will transition a Military license though.
I was a trainer in my Batallion in the Army, Trans Battalion in Germany, man o man... are there some stories I could share... but to the point, he sounds he is going to have a rude awakening and a rough transition to Civilian life. Maybe he can find an inside job as a dispatcher at one of the local companies.MNdriver Thanks this. -
What branch is he in? IMHO he is better off in the military--he can
A-ck w/the other branches to c what might b possible--won't b 1st or last person to switch branches
B-consider changing MOS and retrain something else

Beg him to change his job in the Army and stay Army.. Gosh I wished 20 time over I could get back into the CG

Which in my opinion is complete bullcrap. Military people have to take the EXACT same test under the EXACT same standards as civilians. No offence to the people that serve. If you cant drive to the same standards as those of your civilian counterparts, then maybe you need to learn how to drive within those standards.newbietrucker007 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the input though. I think he will wash out of CDL school. If he does get into a company sponsored training, he will wash out as well.

Where I live the gi bill paid me 1500 a month plus it paid for all my classes and books for college. Iwould tell him to go to college and then get a part time/full time job. If he registers for his classes early he could literally set up his schedule the way he wants. You only have to have at least 1 class in a classroom and the rest could be online if he wanted.
For example he could go be a yard dog at a wal mart dc starting out at 15.50 an hour which they work 3 and 4 day schedules. It would be easy to work 3 days then set up your collge schedule for the 4 days you have off. Still have plenty of time off and get a college education where he could move up the ladder with wal mart or decide logistics sucks and go in the medical field or whatever he wants. This is the path I would take if I could go back a few years. -
Is there a reason why he can't re-up and learn a new MOS? My dad had three MOS's. My sister had two MOS's. In fact it took her 10 years before she worked the first one. Tell him to put in for drill sergeant school or something like that to get out of that company and under someone elses command until the dust settles.
It sounds like his C O is booting him because he can't do his job. Unless he wants to get out. It's hard to beat a blue collar job on the outside.
