I just finished cdl school at Smith & Solomon in Lakewood NJ, where I got my Class A with double triple, hazmat and tanker.. I am having a real hard time finding a job here's why.. I need weekends home.. I am divorced and have two kids 6 and 1.. I fought really hard to get them every weekend and I can't give them up.. I've filled out so many applications to so many companies and no one can offer me weekends off because I have no experience local driving is out and otr won't get me home . Have I wasted my time and money choosing this career or is there a company I have overlooked.. I really like driving and was a natural passing my test the first time with ease.. but I'm worried I'm not going to find a job because of my situation. can anyone help me?

Have you tried Schneider? I know they have some options that can get you home at least saturday's and sunday's. It's always worth a shot. Best of luck, hope it works out.

If you have to have weekends off, then you chose the wrong profession.

I know how you feel, as I have 3 young daughters that I like to see as much as possible.

But being a new truck driver means that you will probably be OTR for at least a couple years.
And that means home time every 3-6 weeks, for 2-3 days.

You have to either get adjusted to that lifestyle, or find a more regular job that gives you the time off that you want.

Look into Flat Bed, most of the companies in this segment do not work the weekends.....like TMC and many others. They want 5 loads a week and then send you home exhausted late Friday or early Saturday, and then back on the road late Sunday or early Monday (truckers weekend)

you have to find a local job for that.only other way would be regional, but most of those openings are handed down to exp drivers.the ones that would offer it ot you would be a route you would'nt want as a newb.ie dollar general accounts and such.i'd say you would have to suck it up for atleast 6 months if you had to go otr.

umm,did you do your research and investagate if it was possible to find a job like that before you paid for your training?i'm thinking you might want to try a place that has both class a and b drivers, start as a b and hopefully work up too an a class truck.too much compatition from experienced drivers who want weekends off, unless you can hook up with a trainer on a dedicated account like a walmart or target.don't think any big company would hire you off the street and put u on dedicated.just my thoughts,i could be wrong.

Look, dont listen to the people telling you that you got into the wrong line of work if you need weekends off. I just got my cdl not even a year ago and I do not work weekends at all. I refused to go over the road and be a PUPPET for one of the monster carriers so I applied to every local company in Illinois that I could find and it took a few months and a lot of patience but I found a great job and I'm home every night no weekends and I love it!!!! Just keep looking and dont give up, you WILL find what your looking for it just takes time.

    Moosetek13 and 123456 Thank this.
