Hey thanks for updating this chaz! So many times someone will come on here with a question like this, and then never let us know what the outcome is.

State laws, even though they are mandated by the feds. The feds don't issue your license, the states do. And every state wants to "have it their way." I agree it is irritating, but it is the way of life right now.

The cost of flying back to save my CDL may not be worth it. I would also have to go back at least every two years for a new medical card if I did. I am not happy about this at all. I would ask why these changes were made, but I just know the answer wouldn't make any sense and probably just frustrate me more.

There is a loophole so you can keep your CDL without a medical card. You have to contact your DMV and self certify. There is an option called intrastate exempt, or something like that. If you declare that you do not need a medical card. It means that your CDL is only good in your home state and you can not drive for business purposes, only 'NOT FOR HIRE" or personal use of a CMV. When you want full privileges back, you just get a DOT physical and change your certification bact to interstate non exempt.
That is how it works in IL anyway. I think all states have something similar, but may be worded differantly

here in Georgia you have your non commercial, Class E (A) and class F (B) and than you have your commercial. There are also exemptions for people to posses a commercial drivers license and not need a medical card. For instance firefighters who drive fire trucks or tankers can obtain a commercial with a medical card exemption.

GA also has a self certification through their website and you can update your medical card by scanning it in through the computer on their site on your profile.

I got a reply from the Florida DMV and it isn't as bad as I thought.

The disqualification on your record effects the operation of a commercial motor vehicle. If you want to keep your CDL, go to any Florida driver license office and self-certify. If you are required, show your medical card. Cost is $75 to clear your record. If you visit a tax collector’s office offering driver licenses services, you also will pay a $6.25 service fee. If you do not want to keep your CDL and you choose to downgrade to a Class E driver license, you will not be required to re-test. All exams completed to obtain your CDL will remain on record. If you choose to downgrade you must do so in any driver license office in Florida, regardless of county. Turn in your CDL and request a Class E license. You'll be given a vision exam. Usually other testing is not required unless in observing and talking with you the examiner has cause for concern about your driving ability.

The good news is that all my CDL exam/endorsement passes remain on record, just need a med card and $75 (that answers the "why?") to reinstate them. The other option is to downgrade, but it looks like even if I do so, my CDL passes remain on record should I want to upgrade at a later date. There was no mention of a time limit so hopefully there isn't one. There is an interstate and an intrastate exemption, but I would rather just wait until I needed the CDL and reinstate it fully without any restrictions.

What isn't so clear is whether the "disqualified " status of my license would prohibit me from driving private vehicles until I either pay to reinstate CDL or go through the downgrade process. I have a foreign driver's license, but have a funny feeling that wouldn't supersede the disqualified FL one should I get stopped and the police found out (I am a terrible liar) about the FL license.

Thanks for all the advice, at least for now, panic has been averted.

Sorry folks,

I'm confused about this. So, when I got my Virginia CDL last year (July, 2013) I gave them a copy of my DOT Med Long Form (Interstate-Non Except Status). My VA CDL expiration is not until December, 2017 so is this when they need the next DOT Med (although the latest one I had was May, 2014) or do they need this before Jan, 2015, as another has suggested?

look at your medical card, there is a expiration date. They are only good for two years. You need a dot physical every two years
