Hi people. I'm writing to ask for a favor from any truck driver. I'm currently in the process of filling out an application for a grant with a non profit group here in Oregon to help me pay for cdl training.
The application requires me to do an occupational interview with two people currently working in the trucking field. The idea is to help give me a better understanding of what truck driving is like as a career.
I don't know anybody who drives a truck so I decided to reach out to see if I could get some help.
If you are interested, please fill out the following questions to your liking. Answers can be brief and I assure you this info is only shared between me and the grant committee. If you want to pm me feel free to.
Thanks for reading.

Good luck. I'd suggest something else before you endeavor. Regardless of the feedback you get, be advised this is a very tough row to hoe.
Brickwall Thanks this. -
Yeah I understand what I'm getting into, but I'm not so young anymore and think it could be a really good fit for my personality. And if it doesn't work then at least I tried.

Go to youtube and look up Red Viking Trucker
watch two or three of his videos and you can fill in your answers there.
If you want interviews, several of his videos are interviews of men, women, and recently a husband and wife team.
You could use those interviews as your interviews....

I'll definitely consider it. Thanks for the input.

Goodwill Industries has free cdl school tuition. Maybe it's not so complicated to apply for. Every state has the program and it depends if funds are available throughout the year. You don't drive for Goodwill at graduation; you go anywhere you want.

Job title: truck driver
Company name: Prime
How long in this occupation: 1 yr
Average hours worked per week: 70-100
How hard is it to try and find and keep stable employment on this field?
Easy
How did you find your job?
Talking to other drivers at truck stops, at shippers and receivers. Calling recruiters to ask for information.
What are the positives of doing this kind of work?
Work is easy to find. It’s one of the only jobs out there you can make a decent wage at the entry level. You get to see things and meet people all over the country. It’s a very flexible job. Truck driving is a respected profession.
What are the potential negatives about this career?
Working a ton of hours every week. Very good chance you will have an unscrupulous boss or employer. Being away from family for long periods of time. Potential legal and/or financial liability in an accident. Dealing with unpleasant shippers and receivers. Plans and sleep schedule constantly changing.
What should someone expect to make in this occupation?
Starting wage: If you aren’t making at least close to $1000 per week starting out, it isn’t worth the hassle. Find a company that will pay you that.
Average wage: $50,000-$60,000.
What would they suggest someone do if they want to enter this occupation?
Go to school, get your license. Most of the larger companies will train you for free with a one year employment contract. You have nothing to lose if you go this way. Nothing is permanent. -
