I will share my disaster story with you all . . In 1993 I drove for a little, rag-tag outfit in Amarillo Texas that hauled Rail containers to and from BNR to SF Yrds in and around Amarillo.
on one particular day it was my assignment to move empty containers from the Burlington Northern yard back to our shop to resupply our yard with empty 40 foot containers...
Anyways, I was given a "specially modified" flatbed to do the job-it was just an old ratty flatbed (rotten wood deck) that had each of the 4 corners built up with little welded, raised pieces of steel -so that the containers could slide on the deck but not "off" the trailer surface when set on it...
no toggles or straps whatsoever-just gonna "set" the box on it and run . . .
The company had been using this flatbed so that a guy could whip into the railyard and move a lot of boxes without even getting out of truck. The railyard would have a hyster heavy duty front-fork loader to just snatch a box off a train car and you would pull into position and he'd set it down and bamm you roll! again . . NO STRAPPING, LOCKING DOWN BOX. (This is how it's been done right?)
Well, I am having a great day so far ,7 empty 40 foot containers back to the yard . . .well on my 8 th trip guess what? I am crossing under the part of the trip where I go UNDER interstate 40 . . . BAM!!! mY FACE IS CRUSHED AGAINST the steering wheel . . .(with a cigarette in my mouth) and it sounds like a cannon just went off! I look at gauges . . .I look out windsheild . . .I check my west coast mirrors and Ohhh sH243! Where the F#$# IS MY TRAILER? . .
You see , I hit the overpass and the force ripped that trailer past the welded steel and right off the back!
I got out to see if I had killed anyone behind me and I didn't and the trailer had even slid off the roadway neatly parked itself on the shoulder!
My boss soon showed up and man he was pissed! I had learned that day that certain containers were higher than others, they are called "high cube trailers" . .you can Identify them becuse they have a yellow and black strip of tape near the top and even say "high cube" on them . . .
I was not fired for this and later found out I was the third driver that did this . . .The company also said that the regular loaders at the railyard know better than to put a high cube on that flatbed rig we had and that particular day,the owner of the yard was working the hyster and also was not aware of the high cube info . .
I take responsibilty for it though . . .you must check load out!
