I have been a land surveyor for the last 10 years. I have 3 young boys ages 9, 7, & 6. My dad and father in law have both urged me to buy a truck and take the family on the road with me. I'm not convinced that things are the way they once were where one could go to school, get their license and drive for a good company while buyinga truck. Can anyone point me to a thread on this topic, or give me some more information?

I'm 29. I don't have my CDL. What can I realistically expect if I decide to try to go for it? How long before I could really be able to take the family? Do companies allow family to ride? Also, even though she is only 5' 1", my wife isn't totally against the idea of driving team. That seems to presenta whole new set of issues. Thanks guys!

I'd gain some industry experience first, at least 6 months, before buying a truck.

You and/or your wife will need to attain your CDL first . . .

Start looking around on the site - you'll find most of your questions already answered.

How difficult would it be and how long would it take for her and I to be able to drive team? Keep in mind, we have the young boys.

about 30 days to get cdl. then like 30 days for training. teaming is easy all trucking companies love teams.

So 60 days for me to be able to drive solo, then what? So I get my license while she takes care of the kids, but can the kids ride with me while she gets her license? Or can I train her, but again the issue of the kids riding along pops up. That's the logistical problem I don't know how to address.

That's what I was looking for. I just figured since our end goal was to be o/o, I'd put it here. Thank you.

If this isn't a troll your idea is crazy. Insurance, safety, and legal roadblocks aside (no company allows families to ride in a truck - two seats/seatbelts only - most do not allow a rider). The road is no place for a family this is work. If you and the wife want to team that's fine but you need to get those boys raised and out of the house first. It's one thing to have a family and trucking is all you and your family have ever known. It's another thing altogether to have a young family and change careers midstream going into trucking.

Is it crazy? My brothers and I rode with my dad as a kid for months. We stayed in the sleeper and kept ourselves entertained with books and board games when we weren't doing school work. I'm not saying it was legal, I have no idea about that, but we did it. He was an o/o so he didn't havea "company" to report to, but I don't ever remember having to hide at weigh stations/Check points either. If new laws make it impossible to do it with a family then we will wait till the boys are grown. That's why I'm here asking questions.

Yeah I've ridden and driven "illegally" or whatever as a kid in farm trucks. Go out and back on a trip to Florida. You're talking about raising a family on the road in a truck, yeah, that's crazy talk.
