Hey Ya'll,
Quick question regarding hours of service. I was looking at the FMCSA website, reviewing various companies BASICS in attempts to learn more about it, and noticed quite a few hours of service violations...mainly the "logbook not current" variety.
My question is: when are you supposed to update your logbook? At each stop? Periodically throughout the day. Example....if you pull into a rest stop for a quick bathroom break and then get back on the road is the expectation there that you update your book documenting the stop? I understand at the end of the work day it should be updated, but most of the ones I saw appeared to be at a scale house as "Inspection Facility" was listed as "Fixed Site". It would seem to me that it would be way too easy to get behind the power curve as you make the miles.
May seem like a pretty dumb question, but as an outsider looking in... I'm curious. I went to school while in the military and got my CDL (2009), but have not used it professionally. I don't recall if we went over this or not.
Thanks for everything you guys and gals do. Its much appreciated.

Log book gets brought up to date every time your duty status changes. Rest stop, unload, lunch, sleeper, etc.

Right on. Thanks Brother.

No problem keep the greasy side down partner!

It's much easier to update it as-you-go. Just takes a second. Get in your truck, update, then go.

That's right Chief, any change of duty status, log it. If you're using Elogs, and you stop driving and forget to log, it does it for you; only problem it logs on duty-not driving.

I only change my duty status if it lasts 15 minutes or more. If it is something like doing a quick safety check, I will annotate on my remarks where I stopped, and what I did. But the logs should be fairly current. If you are waiting to be loaded/unloaded, there really is no excuse to draw a quick line.

Right on and thanks for your service! When did you leave the Navy?
