I have heard about an 8-2 split, but it was never taught. Is this a thing of the past? If not, please explain it in an application context...

Do a search for how to do a split sleeper birth, plenty of threads explaining it.
-
Log sleeper berth for 8 hours. After 8 hours you get the remaining "drive time" you had before the 8 hour sleeper berth. Then later, you log 2 hours off duty and get the full clock minus what you use.
Kinda hard to explain but once you do it, it's easy. Easier on elogs obvious since the computer do the math for you. Its useful if you been sitting in a dock all day running down your 14. But your drive time doesn't get effected since you are not driving. So once you get loaded/unloaded, you drive to whatever, sleeper for 8, and start driving again.
.....get it? -
There was a recent thread on here that explained it about as good as I've ever had it explained to me.

Its a good tool to have if you sit around all day waiting to get loaded or unloaded. The old regs were even better to have the split- but that was then and this is now.

One of the only good things about Electronic logs are they do the split berth calculations for you. Just drive when it says you can drive.

Lepton1 Thanks this.

And after you're done loading or unloading check your off duty time. If you're close to 2 hours, it's a good idea to sit until the two hours is up before going back on duty. That way you can do an 8 hour sleeper berth and take off again if taking a 10 won't get you to your next load in time or it might cut it close or to avoid morning rush hour. There's always a good chance you'll be sitting for two hours if you have a live load/unload anyways in which case you'll get your remaining time back. There's been a few times where I looked at my logs and saw I only had 1:50 or so off duty and left because I wasn't paying attention and ended up regretting it.

Best explanation I've seen on split break:
Dave_in_AZ, Lepton1 and Commuter69 Thank this. -
Most important thing to note is that this NEVER gives you a fresh 14/11. It can only extend your 14 window.
