I’ve been on a forklift once or twice I can recall. I’ve only used a forklift less then 10 times in 10 years. So I’m lost in applesauce. Now a electric standing pallet jack im a beast on.

You aren't missing much. It's boring. Then people screw with you and turn off your propane tank when you aren't looking. Ever driven a yard goat/hostler? Those aren't too bad.

I am in the same boat as Radman, I haven't actually worked a dock operation in years, I have maybe been on a lift four times now since starting at Saia, and one time was just training/cert, the rest was just pulling a couple TBUs off at a dark terminal, hands down though I don't care if it's inbound a.m. or outbound p.m. dock, the hostler position in my opinion is the job to have, especially at a busy terminal, no other dock workers or lifts to contend with, just you and the goat and a #### load of moves, made the day go by fast, actually enjoyed hostling back in the day.

Being the yard goat is where it's at. I loved hitting the yard for 3-4 hours when I was on a forced dock bid. I don't think my ### was in a forklift seat more than 5 times my entire time at FXF.

I can run a forklift. I even swung a load or two at our terminal. But the inbound shift at our terminal is nothing short of bedlam.

Outbound I could probably handle, but then I’d lose my log exemption. The other thing is, “you have to make that last pallet fit, I don’t care how you do it”.

Outbound is worse in its own way. You have to worry about packing and stacking the line haul trailers which can be a major pita at times. Inbound the dock is more clogged but you just plop the skid down in the trailer and you’re done.

Theoretically it should be simple. Load a rack, put 2 skids under the rack, put 2 skids on the rack.

...That is, until the supervisors say “ignore those cones on top of the freight that all say ‘do not stack”.
