Are these even drum brakes? I just need to know what to say on the pre-trip for my CDL test. I won't be driving this truck anymore after that.
All the videos I've seen only show drum brakes without any kind of cover like these have.

That little oval hole in the backing plate is the inspection hole. You should be able to see the brake pad and drum clearance with a flashlight. In my day, most of those backing plates fell off.

Those plates don't stay on the truck too long around me. It's such a shame. You follow me?

We used to call those dust covers. But whatever the technical name is. Good advice on posts so far there Vinny. Suprised to see those. I purchased a new 1981 cabover in 1982 and it came from the factory without " dust covers". Don't know about new ones nowdays.

The hold up pretty good these days.

My truck drop has em. So far they're the only thing on the truck NOT falling apart.

Thanks guys! I guess I'll just tell the examiner that I would get a flashlight and inspect the brake lining for dangerous wear and oil/debris/not CBB then point out the two holes. Test is next Wednesday! hopefully I can nail it the first time

Carry a small led flashlight in your pocket..to do your brake inspection etc. Bet examiners never saw that before. Good luck.

    Grubby Thanks this.
