LOL! I grew up here in Phoenix and dad moved us to Massachusetts when I was 15.....in November. Let's just say that I had seen snow and ice exactly 4 times before the move. It was like moving to a different planet. I think I wore my heaviest coat from the time we arrived until the next May. Ice is scary. Don't feel bad. And the only thing cleats would do is leave nasty cleat marks on your legs and butt when you fall and land on them!
He has done a good job for me so far. I never talked to him about the company or benefits or anything else....just when I could start the academy. I have been in sales pretty much my whole career and I would rather not listen to the sales pitch. I have learned more from people on this forum than I could ever have by asking any recruiter questions. For that, THANK YOU!!!
I did my online tests last month and sent my application at the same time. I will go for my DOT physical next week as well my CDL permit - I should be starting school late January or early February.
As far as benefits and pay...are you hired by the company the day you get assigned to a mentor? Or do you have to wait until you get on the mentor's truck? Or does Swift officially hire you once you complete the academy (and have passed the CDL test and road test)?
Again, thanks to all who contribute to these posts and share your knowledge. It is an incredible resource for anyone wanting information about this industry and the people who make it run.
Stay warm NaNa!
How are most Swift trucks equipped in the cab?

One more question and I will quit for a while...PROMISE.
Are Swift's loads drop and hook or do you have to shuffle freight around and fingerprint the freight? -
Well, after the school you have "orientation" which was 2 days long when I attended. At the end of the second day you get your employee # and that is when you're hired. You then get your mentor assignment. You don't start getting paid until you step on his truck. Or hers.
So Phoenix also started having the students get their permit before starting school? I haven't spoken to them in a while so I wasn't aware of that. I expected it though. -
I'm going to get my physical and permit this week. -
BTW, you will be issued a pair of safety glasses from swift with rose colored lens no less.
The Swift Academy? LOL, I kinda like that... -
Wow.... *sigh*. I guess we'll see what happens
Thanks for the answer though. -
Tbone, don't let it discourage you. You are going to be a brand new driver. Swift will give you an opportunity to learn. Two years from now (if all goes well) you will have the experience to get on as a seasoned hand with a company of your choosing.
Swift is a place to start, use that tool for what it is, and that's a stepping stone...
I started at Swift, and I learned stuff there that I have never seen since. They go everywhere, and haul anything and everything. To be honest, the two best trainers I ever had were from Swift.TbonesPapa Thanks this. -
Yeah, I know that I will amount to dog poop for a while but that comes with earning my dues.
I am using them as a way to get a CDL and experience so I can move on to better things a year or two down the road.
Thanks for the encouragement and kind words!!!! -
I haven't touched freight yet. Even now that we're dedicated to W-M and drop pallets to stores before going for backhauls I don't touch freight. Well okay ONE night I helped a woman push the pallet out of the trailer because the floor jack wouldn't get over the dock plate lip. But THAT was just because she's always super nice to me.
We must live under the blessed star or something because we never have the troubles and bad treatment others speak of. Well, we were on another fleet and didn't have as nice of a fleet manager as we do now. But that's to be expected. -
Yeah T-bone, granted I havent worked there since 2006 but I never touched anything either. Only time I ever touched freight at all was with JB hunt, and that was only one load. Most of the stuff I got with Swift at that time when I was there was 99% drop and hook. JB Hunt on the other hand, more like 99% live unload.
