Hubby and I are trying to decide which trucking company to go with and wondering how much of a priority we should place on living close to a terminal.
I've gotten great advice about living near a terminal... we can place our truck in the shop during hometime, which can save us time on the road hopefully. Also, it provides a safe place to leave the truck during hometime.
One company, Shaffer, is very near our home. I've read good stuff about them, they have good pay and benefits, but there are threads from teams that say the miles are low (the threads are over a year old, don't know if miles are still low) So not so sure about going with them. Have you heard if their miles are getting any better?
The other companies we are considering (Watkins & Shepard, USXpress, Covenant)are a couple of hours away from nearest terminal. We are also looking at ConWay, nearest terminal is several hours away.
How far do you live from your nearest terminal? How does it work out for you?
How close do you live to your trucking terminal? How important is that?

For me, much less hassle living close to a terminal. Parking the truck on their property during home time lessens or eliminates responsibility for the unit in case of theft or vandalism. You can easily commute with your personal vehicle to and from work. Shop time while on home time, etc. Unless there are no other choices, I prefer a company within 50 miles of the house.

10 minutes. While it's a home weekly company it doesn't really seem to have any bearing on whether I get home more or less time or earlier than the other guys......in fact I usually roll in later on the weekend than most as I run hard and they run me that way.
The advantages for me are that I don't have to worry about where to park for the weekend, don't have to deal with waiting around the drivers lounge when service is due....just write it up when I come in , go home and forget it and it's done when it's time to go back out.
Also, payroll, safety and hr are right there close and if I need to see someone in person for any questions or issues I can and don't get stuck playing phone tag somewhere far from the offices. Likewise with my DM and/or weekend dispatch who generally give out the loads to start the week. It's much easier to cultivate the personal relationships with these people to get good loads out for the week or to have issues resolved or questions answered when it's a quick hop in the car to go see someone face to face and they know me........ as opposed to just being a truck number on a screen and voice other end of the phone that they never see.Voyager1968 and jungledrums Thank this. -
The terminal to my current company is 50 feet in my back yard.
I rent a house off my boss, pretty nice place in a terrible neighborhood. The exterior makes it look like a crack house, but the interior is amazing. Was formally an office, for a business that was here before my company got here. Boss put in a shower and some walls; really nice place now. Not gonna go into detail, but the rent is cheap as hell, plus I save A LOT of gas for my car. I leave the house for groceries and that's about it.
My last company, on the other hand, FFE- the closest terminal was in Jersey, lol.Mr Ed and jungledrums Thank this. -
5 miles...
Personal experience for me was, had more stuff stolen outta trucks sitting at companies yards than I'd care to mention. Never once had an issue parked near home at small truck stops.jungledrums Thanks this. -
My terminal is 75 miles away from my home. I have a place to park the trailer and I park truck there on weekends and at my house if I do happen to get home.
