Gosh there's a myriad of ways you can buy a truck and just as many opinions. If you buy used its a crap shoot, no doubt. If you buy new be prepared to put a hefty DP of 20 % on the deal. Not many can afford to do that.
I bought my first truck thru a so called reputable dealer.......well he thinks he is but I beg to differ.
It was a 06 Pete 387 with very low miles on it, but appearances can be deceiving.
I financed it thru my credit union with 20% down at 6.9% over 4 yrs.
but since then I've put a lot of $$ into it thru repairs, that's the reality.
an old timer truck sales man told me at the time of me buying this thing, that buying new is the best way in the long run.
He may have a point but some of these guys can do their own repairs, so they can do better to buy used.
It's all a matter of what will work for you.
Theres no right or wrong way.
You decide, but just be careful.

It's gonna take a LOT more than 20 percent down to get into a new truck for a first time buyer. Most finance companies won't talk to you unless you got forty grand down, plus another twenty running money to get you started. Obviously this changes if you have other assets, such as real equity in real estate.

First time buyer last year... 10K down on a 40K 06 W9 with 7% interest paying 1100 mth for 30 months. Saved up for 3/4 of the down payment and used a part of my trust fund that my dad gave to me. But without the 4 years exp, the bank probably wouldnt of approved me, at least so what I've been told.

I bought a 10 year old cabover, cash, for the trade in price the dealer was giving. It had already been leased to the company I was a company driver for, so it was seamless and I had some maintenance records. A year later, an acquaintance at the same company was buying a Western Star, and offering his custom ordered 9 year old FLD to anyone for the trade in price. It was double what I paid for the cabover, and I paid cash, then sold the cabover to my friend for the same price I paid the year before. I drove that until some girl hit me, and her $10,000 insurance policy didn't cover the repairs. That's when I financed my first truck, the Western Star in my pic. By the time I financed that, I had already bought two cash dry van trailers and financed two flats. I've financed other trucks and trailers since then as well. Here's my advice to someone just starting out. Buy something old and rebuilt without emissions, or buy something new. I've been working Truck Paper and some dealerships a lot lately, and I just can't see spending $65,000 on a 5 year old truck with 600k and no OEM warranty. The Cali rules has the market kind of crazy right now. You can get brand new in the $120's with FET. It won't be your dream truck, but you'll have warranty and minimal repairs and maintenance for the first few years. You'll need to bring at least $20k to the table though. Then again, if you're doing a cash pre-emmisions you'll need that and more.
