I'm starting training on the 18th for my CDL to become a solo OTR driver for USA trucking. I am really excited and cannot wait to drive, but I have come across an issue.... I'm female, and I'll be alone, OTR 3 weeks at a time. Be you male or female, how do you protect yourself if God forbid someone tries to break into your truck, mug you at a truck stop, or do other harm? I'm a pretty tough chick, not a sissy, but I know there is no way to defend yourself if caught off guard and so I'm always alert, but sometimes, you just need more than your fists, or steel-toed boots.

How do you keep safe? Do you carry pepper spray or a gun? Proper permits of course if you do, but do you have any tips or suggestions for me? I'm sure I will never have problems, but it never hurts to be prepared for anything. I would rather get some opinions from experienced drivers, rather than just assume and be paranoid. haha

This is a great question. One thing I've noticed is that at truck stops, there are usually lots of truckers and people in general so the chances of something happening are less. There are the obvious things that you can do to protect yourself. Make sure your doors are locked when you lay down for a nap. Don't answer your door to anyone you don't know. You could carry a gun but I'm sure most companies won't allow it and remember that different states have different laws on carrying a firearm and on concealed weapons. Whats ok in one state may not be in the next. A really handy item that you can purchase in most truck stops is the tire thumper. Not only does it have a practical use but also can double up as a protection device. If someone were to try and get into your truck at a truck stop, I'm sure that if you were to shout out on the CB that there would be 10 truckers there in no time to assist you. Always know your surroundings and if not comfortable, move your truck to a new location. I know these are "duh" answers but are the most practical in my opinion. BTW, good luck on your new career and keep us posted on how its going. :)

I never even thought of the thumper! Great suggestions! Using the CB is a good idea too. I feel dumb for not thinking of these things, but I suppose it makes sense since I'm new to the field.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm very excited. I will for sure keep everyone posted and as I'm going to C1 and can't find any good reviews online of the school I think I will type up a good detailed overview of it for those like me that are just starting out. :)

I would consider getting a CCW and a revolver, but I would be afraid if something ever did happen that a stray bullet might hit a fuel truck nearby or another trucker. I was considering a taser, but I know those are illegal in a lot of states and it's hard to find out where you can or can't have it.

A thumper is a great idea if ever something bad DID happen. Plus I know if someone ever DID try anything I would relish the chance to beat the snot out of them with something large and solid. haha

I always have 2 knives. Smaller flip in my pocket and a six inch hunting knife in the truck. Easy to say that they are used for personal use, such as opening packages, etc etc. Also a couple steak knives for eating. Tire thumper is great, so is a keychain size pepper spray. Stun guns and hand guns could get you into a lot of trouble. I would suggest parking at truckstops as much as possible, definitely not on a ramp or a closed down store. Evening, morning hours, there are usually a few drivers coming and going to and from truckstop. Stay close without making yourself seem like a threat.lol..Another great thing is that loud, obnoxious thing that sounds off when you pull the chord..HORN.lol...tug it a few times and you'll have someone looking to see what in the he** your problem is..lmao

I believe in God as much as the next person, but God is just like the cops - He can't be everywhere and do everything for everybody. Faith in Kimber, S&W, etc. will go a lot further to protect you.

perfectely legal to carry a cattle prod in the truck--and believe me--you will know when you git shocked by that--not as bad as a taser or stun gun--but still it gives a good snap
