Okay, I am new to the trucking world. I will be running the electronic end of things for my housemate. However, I don't know the first thing about using a QUALCOMM, and I am not allowed to go to orientation with him. He doesn't know much about them, either...didn't have to use one the last time he went OTR. (Yes, that was a while ago!) I also don't know how to work an E-Log. So, will anyone be kind and help educate me on the nuts and bolts of these?? It would be greatly appreciated.
How do you use a qualcomm? Help??

A few different units none of them are hard to use.
He's going to have to learn himself first and then show how to use it.
I wouldn't be doing his logs for him though.
Qualcomm is just a fancy name for Text Messaging lol.
Mostly for the Driver it's a way to send Messages to dispatch.
For when your loaded empty or at at shipper.
Dispatch also sends messages back such as Preplans and stuff.
Elogs aren't difficult to use either.
If you can use a computer (post here) and or use a smart phone it is really simple..
Yes I know the QC does and monitors some under the hood stuff. But that's not for the driver to worry about.Last edited: Aug 25, 2014

They'll have a q-comm class for those that don't know how to use them. Even a caveman can do it !

They will give him paperwork, step by step instructions on usage

Dot reg . Driver must log their own time to log, dot ain't gonna ask u how you log they gonna ask them.

after you get used to the company get yourself a big piece of tin foil and cover up the reciever that really gets em going

Easier to use a metal pail and a house type broom. Use the broom handle to set the pail over the antenna on the back of the truck.
The tinfoil is best to be used for a hat over in the social forums where some will admire you ability to create them. grin -
Gotcha! I didn't realize that I couldn't help him log. That shows what a greenhorn I am.
As for the QUALCOMM, I think I can manage that one. If they give instructions for usage, we should be sitting pretty. I'm not perfect with computers by any means (still have trouble navigating at times), but I can txt and get around enough to get by. I am good at figuring out things, too...so is he. Between the two of us, that is fine.

It's pretty much trial and error. Similar to learning how to use a computer, smart phone, or any other electronic device. It may seem overwhelming at first trying to send the required messages to comply with company policies. But eventually it will be second nature.

Most companies require Canned Messages such as: Arrival at Shipper message, Loaded message, Arrival at Consignee(Receiver) message, and an MT(Empty) message. Also Arrival at Stop Message and Departing Stop messages when the load has multiple stops. All have what's called a Free form message which is a blank text screen that you can write a message on.
