I've attended two different CDL schools, the first to become educated as an effective beginning truck driver, and the second to recieve a refresher after being out of trucking for 13 months due to back surgeries. Without hesitation, the best training would come from Bates Community College, which is PTDI certified and has an excellent cadre of instructors. However, you have rejected that route.
Commercial Driver Services, in Lakewood, is my runner-up for a school that gives you enough eductation to get your CDL. After my own personal research, and comparing the instruction-set of the private schools with that of Bates program, I would point you in the direction of Commercial Driver Services, rather than the other two private school programs. Just my own humble opinion.
How hirable will I be?

So, yes, they are one of the top on my list. I asked who recruits from them and was told over 100 companies (not all of them Class A companies I'm sure) but certainly quite a bit.
I would go the route of a community college except I can't afford to be out of work for 5 months.
I appreciate the input. The more the merrier. -
Down. I use a Tomtom GPS unit to warn me on speed.
They give and audiible warning. I am lots older then you
But I still can't drive 55 with the sports car I own' LOL. Worth every penny I paid for it
Good luck. BTW stay away from Werner. They suck big time. -
Hi,
I printed two driving records for myself to double check my record. Unfotunately, it's not quite as clean as I had hoped.
1st, I printed a "complete driving record." This shows a 15mph ticket from May 2009
2nd, I printed out a "3 year driving record- Commercial" and it reports "no violations, convictions, or accidents"
I'm curious why they have different info and which one will be looked at when applying. Are companies required to use the Commercial abstract only or can they look at the complete abstract?
For the 15mph conviction, it says the court finding was "conviction." It doesn't say anything about "reckless driving" or anything like that.
In addtion, I'm going to have more ticket on my record for 11mph over that I got in July. Just paid it so it's not on my record yet.
Is this going to mess up my chances of getting a job?
I looked at the WA DMV website and it says that insurance companies can only access the 3-year record and emloyers can only access the employment record. My insurance company doesn't have a record of my 15mph ticket. I think what happened is that I paid for the ticket and took a class and the ticket was put on my main record but not on my insurance record, hence my insurance company doesn't have it and the commercial abstract doesn't show it.
I'm just trying to figure out what this means for me. I made this a seperate post and some folks said it would be bad for me but didn't really confirm if an employer can look at my record that has my ticket listed. I find it very confusing. I'll probably wind up calling the DMV and some companies to hear what they have to say about it all.
Thanks as always -
Ok, so my 15mph does show up on my DMV employment record which can be accessed by companies. So, what they will see is one ticket for 15mph over and one for 11mph over. Before I spend money on school tuition, I'm wondering what the best policy is? Probably call recruiters and try to see if I should bother.
Anyone have a sense of companies that might be forgiving of my record? I live in the Seattle area and will do OTR. Not picky about home time. Can live with OK but not great wages.
Thanks all -
you should be able to get on with anybody as long as you don't have a dui or felony. I know most companies allow no more then three moving violations in the past three years. Best thing to do is call the companies your looking at and ask or google cdl jobs. Best of luck.

Call up the companies recruiting departments and submit applications for prehires. That way you will know who will accept you and who will not.

Thanks everyone for your great advice so far! One more question- should I include the ticket that was totally dismissed? It was in Feb 09. I don't recall what the speed was on it or what the fine was. It doesn't show up on any of my records.
I know applications will ask for all tickets in last 5 years or so but since it doesn't show up, should I play dumb? I know some people on here have said that things like that can appear in background checks even if it isn't on the driving record itself. -
It couldn't hurt to mention it, I metioned one i had dismissed and was told as long as I wasn't convicted then it doesn't matter. Just another thing to ask the recruiters. I know i'm a newbie and i'm not a experienced driver, I've just been planning this career change for about 6 to 7 months so I've been asking questions out the butt to every recruiter I talk too.
