You will probably enjoy a trucking career. You don't seem like a woman that would be happy marrying a 300 lb logger and living in a single wide in the middle of no where with 5 little kids running around the trailer with dirty diapers.

A fellow trucker helped my wife wash the windshield the other day at the fuel island. He said "I see you're vertically challenged" and away he went. (I was asleep in the bunk).

Now, he knows we run team, not hitting on her, just being helpful. And thats just most truckers - helpful and chatty.

She didn't get all uppity on him and shoo him off either, she was raised better than that.

Of course, when she told me, I flew into a jealous rage and told her IF I EVER, (smack), EVER, (slap) CATCH YOU TALKING TO ANOTHER MAN . . . .

You'll be fine out here with all the above advice, chivalry is not yet dead. Good luck.

Everything they are saying so far is true...use common sense and (for the most part) you will be fine. If you get that "feeling" that all is not right...put her in gear and move along. HOS be darned. Your company should understand, if not, find another company.

The one thing that has not been really addressed yet is that subset of male drivers out here that seems to take your very presence OTR as a personal affront. You don't run across them often, but you will. Something about you will set them off, just like the bully in high-school or junior high....just ignore them.

The best..is when you get to a shpr or rcvr that has a tricky dock or door...one that has a specific trick to getting it easily. You see truck A struggling to get in, offer them the tip, they disregard you and act like jerks. Get back in your truck...watch them struggle some more. When its finally your turn to dock next to them in an even more difficult spot...Whip it in there, in one smooth move like you were born driving a truck...give em a smile and go on about your business...You can literally see the smoke coming out of their ears. It's great.

If you are young and reasonably attractive...what you will hear most often is either

    A. What made you decide to come out here and do THIS?
    B. You are the best looking truck driver I've seen all (insert time frame).

    Harmless chatter...nothing offensive there.

Very rarely, almost never really..do they really cross a line. In that case, you simply ignore it. Stare them directly in the eye and they will generally back down. Only cowards try to intimidate a woman, cowards are generally cowed quite nicely with a little show of spine from a "girl". Do not hang your head, shuffle your feet and allow them to see that they've made you uncomfortable. Straighten up, look them directly in the eye..and walk away.

Also, a lot of them don't do more than just double take and go on about their business...we are still a bit of an oddity. It draws attention, but we are all busy, we all have work to get done, miles to be made...there isn't a lot of time for screwing around.

The one piece of advice I will give...stay away from young male drivers. Seriously...most of them don't know what they are doing, and wouldn't help you even if they did. You got a problem, question or need some help...ask an older driver.
