Company hack here just wondering what some of you owner ops started with in your maintenance account before hitting the road. I saw a guy yesterday get his truck towed , he didn't have any money set back for a break down

    Rideandrepair and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

    When I started? Or now?

When I started,I think I had maybe $5k.....But then 5k would get you a lot back in the 80's and 90's
Tires were under 150 bucks- Overhaul was maybe $5-6 k road service or tow under $200 bucks

These days- My maintenance account is near 6 figures- Ill be retired before that could ever be emptied.

You just took out a loan if you needed a repair?

Well I didn't have too. but would have if I had needed too.
I did have a rolling loan. I have always done my own repairs, so it does not cost anything like it does if you farm out repairs.
I also tried to buy trucks that would be paid off before any major repairs were needed, and was successful for the most part. I have only had to pull a head off of one truck before I had 3 years time with it, and I only had two more payments on it when it went down. All my trucks were before all the emission crud, they hang on them now, most of my friends that have newer trucks are crying all the time, and have no choice really but to buy new before they run out of warranty, then down time has taken a toll on several of them.

It is a different deal today, a guy would have to have a little lick on his side to get by the way we could start out back before all the emmissions hit the scene.

Had 7500 early this year had a clutch go out and than Dpf sensors malfunctioned , all gone in a week . Stayed on the road to get it back up but always seems like break downs come at the worst time . Than replaced 8 drive tires a month later , oh what fun . I have 20 k in Credit cards good credit just in case crap hits the fan . I'm on a good run for the month so far . Stack it up !

Work with a local bank to get the truck loan and then that bank will loan you money to fix it so you can work and pay them back for the loans they’ve given you.

So you pretty much get a credit card to cover you if the ship starts to sink?
