My father in law drove into his mid 70s, logging truck in northern Minnesota.
Passed a few years back.
Would outwork most men any age and never took any meds, not even a aspirin his whole life..
One tough bird.
How old is too old to be driving?

My grandmother whos 99 who drives her self to HEB just down the street is legally blind somehow the car has shown no hits to other cars or other things. Doesn't changed fact we have tried everything keep her from driving including unhooking the batteries, to spark plugs.
But we later find out the neighbor whos been charging her way too much by 100$ more then the average lawn mower service would fix her car. We later had a cease and desist order on top of the fact the lawyers are involved for taking advantage of her knowing full well shes not completely in right state of mind. She was the first person within the area of the city that had the house there that was back in 1925 now it's one the busiest part of the city. That's the only reason we don't have her committed to a nursing home though shes not expected to live much more.
That said you cannot convince her it is not safe for her to drive. I have since the person next door barred from coming over to con her. Taken all her tires off and put them on center blocks and took the engine out. I have also installed a birdbath in where then engine block used to be I received calls from her she thinks the oil is spilling out the car and birds are trapped in the car.Scooter HBG, Dale thompson, kemosabi49 and 2 others Thank this. -
About the last criteria I would use would be chronological age. Many states have requirements, PA for one that requires a physician to notify the DMV that his patient can no longer safely drive, and they pull the license. Saves a lot of family arguments like @dieselpowered describes above.
I would much rather have an older driver with tons of experience and good record around me than a new driver with much less. They know their limits, and hang it up in time.
The biggest variable that messes thing up is a lot of older drivers
1. Need the money
2. Have absolutely no life outside of driving, and soon die after they stop.
Don't let #2 happen to you.Scooter HBG, Derailed and 86scotty Thank this. -
Age is just a number. Depends on the individual. Someone at 65 could be as deteriorated as 100 year old person. Somebody at 85 could be as healthy and agile as a 65 year old person so really it's a case-by-case situation.

When it only takes you 10 minutes to do a pre-trip,
but takes you 20 minutes to climb into the truck,
you might be too old to drive.Scooter HBG, Derailed, Wasted Thyme and 4 others Thank this. -
John L. Shupe from the Shupe Brothers in the 1950’s-‘60’s and the half owner and founder of Monfort of Colorado just passed away last year. He was I believe 98. He was still active in all things trucks with his sons company.
