Let's see, OP wants to know about legal weights in Cali, he says nothing in trailer, then is ask if he's empty, OP say No. Is it me or am I missing something ?

Plenty of guys been driving 5+ years and never been west of the Mississippi. And California certainly has earned a reputation in the industry that's hard not to have heard bits and species about here and there, but had no need to concern yourself about it since you never run out there.

First time for everything, for everyone. Cut him some slack and give him some credit for asking. Whatever happened to the saying "no such thing as a stupid question"? If he said he got ticketed for being too long, you'd have bashed him for not knowing or asking. Come on guys. No need to be that way.

He said there were no markings on the trailer to indicate distance from kingpin, not "nothing in trailer"

He meant nothing, as in markings, on the side of trailer.

He's going to CA, which means the back axle can be no further than 40' from the kingpin. That may be further than 8 feet, and it will be a violation at the scale, which are always open.
