I knew someone in your situation who found a guy through DMV who had a truck and trailer that he used specifically for that purpose. You should check with them if you haven't already.

Maybe he's joking, or wants door to door service? Maybe he wants us to do the work for him, besides just giving the advice? maybe he wants lasagna?

This was what I am seeing too.

Post 12 indicated there are companies who rent trucks for CDL & the OP said they dont rent trucks. ????? Sure they do.

The OP also keeps saying "most trucks wont pass inspection". I dont believe that. Any company that commonly rents trucks for people to take a CDL driving test, has trucks that will pass an inspection.

I do know for a fact that here in Monroe, La, the DMV will provide you with a list of people who are contracted to give CDL tests for the DMV. They have trucks for you to rent to take the test. Its an all in one deal. Take the list, call the contractors, set up a date to test. It used to be $60 to test & about $80 to rent a truck for the test. I'm not sure what it costs now.
As a matter of fact one of those on the list is a truck driving school here. You do not have to attend their school to take a CDL driving test with them. They will give you the test & rent you a truck.

Grumpy, not here to debate the rental of trucks, but here at any Ryder or Penske (as the 2 biggest truck rentals), they do not rent to individuals nor anyone that does not have an ICC number, so even though the o/p is not from my area, nor you, there are indeed restrictions to who can rent out a tractor-trailer rig.

Out here, to be honest, I do not know of any "contractor's list" at my DMV, as here in the past, corruption abounds, but maybe where YOU live and maybe the o/p, there IS such a list? Then I'd say you're lucky. As it stands and from what I have known in the past, tractor-trailer rentals CAN BE done at any of the local CDL schools, but an instructor has to go as well, for insurance purposes AND to be the sponsor. No sponsor, NO testing, it's that "simple" here.

So I personally can only "relate" information pertaining to possibly "some" parts of the country. Please DO NOT assume anyone can rent a rig at any time, as there are restrictions that apply.

I agree. No where in my post did I rebute the fact that Ryder & Penski etc, rent trucks to individuals. You & the OP are correct, Ryder & Penski etc... do not rent trucks to individuals. I never disputed that.

Certainly the instructor has to go along... otherwise, who's giving the test? No one will just rent you a truck & tell you to drive away & comeback after a while & we will see how you done. Certainly the instructor will have to go.

The OP asked for help on where he can rent or borrow a truck to take a CDL test in. People have given him information & I am 99% sure that some of his replies to those posts made are inaccurate. However, he asked for help on the subject & I provided some help & ideas. Whether there are lists in his area, I have no idea, but again, he asked for help & idea's & I provided information that I know is factual.

Yeah, I know you were not disputing anything, all I too was giving some instances at least here in my area. We have tried our best to lend some advice to the o/p, whether or not any of it applies to him,or as some have said, he is basically coming up with reasons why it does not work, like many trucks being nearly all wrecks?

This is all we can do, after that, what else, right?

Only in regards to the instructor going to the test site, he is only there for the truck insurance and as a sponsor, he would not actually be giving the tests, the state DMV people would be. I do now that in my local Craig's List ads, some have asked for a trucker that can help with this situation, so that was one more "avenue" for the o/p to follow up on.

    Have a great weekend.!

All we can do is what we have done as well. I wish it were easier for you. Just keep trying I guess is all I can add. Nothing is like the old days, borrow a truck, git-it-done!
