Dry heat is terrible indeed. When I worked at a steel mill in South Carolina, I used to have to work next to the reheat furnace every now and again while the furnace was running production.

140-150 degree ambient. Almost no humidity.

We had a trick to working there though. First, drink Gatorade until we felt bloated. Second, wait till we had to use the restroom. Third, enter the work area.

The first couple minutes are uncomfortable because it's hot as hell and you have to use the restroom.

The trigger point to get out is when you stop needing to pee. That means your body has reabsorbed the moisture, and heat stroke is around the corner.

We never worked alone near the reheat furnace. Too easy to fall out if you were not careful.

My first real driving job was pulling a lowboy in the houston area, mostly local I guess you would say. I was in a brand new 76 jimmy and it had air conditioning, even power steering.
It was not uncommon for me to make 8 or 10 moves a day, so while I ran the air, I also kept the window down, I found that keeping it to cool in it I would be sick feeling most of the time getting in and out and working all the time.

Yes. If you are really working hard in hot weather, drinking cold drinks when you stop working can mess you up.

A lot of old school Southern and Southwestern laborers will tell you to drink hot, sweet coffee when you stop for a while.

If you just stop briefly before starting right back up, cold drinks are fine.

I don't keep my water ice cold for that exact reason. I keep it in the cab and it's more or less room temperature. If it's too cold it makes you feel like crap.
