This really is the best over all route.
May have a few more miles than I-70
It will actually be quicker and use less fuel.

    I second this.

40 is a reliable winter road. You can try 70, but the skiers crowding Vail for one last fling will screw something up and there you are out of luck. I run 40 all the time even though I-70 isnt that big of a deal to me personally.

You will find Oklahoma and the part of the USA leading towards Central NM pretty bare of traffic when it needs to be moving. Kit Carson is one small town I like alot. A truckstop on one end and hardly anything in the rest of there for example.

The food is not too bad. Although you will want to be pretty cautious in Tucamari. I have no idea of how bad or how consistent they have managed to be all these years in terms of Food. Don't even stop in Santa Rosa. It's not worth it.

Be careful in Gallup. And Kingman is a nice little stop for what's it worth.

Alberqu'que is one town you don't need to be in any longer than you can get through it.

I hate to be difficult. But viewing the weather situation anywhere at any time you are going before you get there days in advance is key. There is a storm front in the pacific that will be a problem in a couple days in the West and a 4th Noreaster pending for next week middle.

We expect storms today Arkansas. But you will not run into too much on 40 from NM through.

September through May is when you have to have chains onboard over the mountains. We almost always get hit with one last good one about May 20th every year. Heck, we're supposed to get 3-5 inches of snow this weekend, and I'm a good shot away from the mountains southeast from Denver. Then, we get a few months off of snow for wind, thunderstorm, and tornado season. 40 is good, generally...though, it has its occasional moments out of the blue, too.

Well looking at the wind speeds on the National Weather Service site; currently Kansas is the windiest place on earth 30+, Wyoming is about 10.

I got you this to put on when you go around Wyoming-
