why are you following the gps?
your profile says you have 35 years trucking, YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER then to follow a gps.
You should of called the police, before getting in a situation where you cause damage

    pattyj Thanks this.

I don't get all these old guys who think a truck GPS is worthless. I think they are all technophobes.

I got into more crap back in '95, when I started trucking. No cell phone, no GPS, no Google maps. Just a prepaid calling card for a pay phone, a pager, and a Rand McNally trucker's road atlas(which is mostly useless for looking at city streets). And don't forget, at that time the industry was just transitioning to conventionals with 53' trailers. So, it was tight going everywhere, as most of the infrastructure had been laid out for 55' total length rigs, not 70' monsters.

The truck GPS is the best tool to come along, and smartphones are a close second. Sure, you technophobes can find a few cases where they don't get the job done, but by and large they are a "do not leave home without" tool.

I remember using an Atlas then consulting our box of maps for local deliveries when bedbugging in the late '70's. Beyond that it was getting directions from customers if a pay phone was available (and 90% of the time the customer wasn't reachable since they were driving to their new home or didn't have a phone installed yet). Of course there were also gas station attendants that usually knew the local area like the back of their hand (try asking a counter clerk at a 7-11 directions these days)...

... all that and I'll take the GPS, Google Maps, and Street View any day...

... and ALL of the above with the mindset that if things don't look right you park it in the nearest safe spot and figure it out.

^^^ the most interesting phone call we made was at the only available phone in the area, at a farmer's house in the middle of nowhere. Took us half an hour to explain to him what an '800' number was and assure him that he wasn't going to get charged with long distance if we called our dispatcher.

    Nice looking daughter though.... ;)

yep been to plenty of places where the entrance was on another street, I am Target dedicated and most of the stores I have to enter from a back or side street and some from a certain entrance off the main street, Google Maps helps me find these entrances.

I love the GPS. It reminds me to turn when I'm too busy doing other things like playing on Facebook to pay attention to minor details like traffic and road signs.
