But they don’t float, or so I hear
and is gliding down really gliding?tramm01 and broke down plumber Thank this. -
It's more about potential energy due to altitude. The blades will keep spinning if you lower the collective pitch. At near the bottom you increase pitch to slow your descent and finally you go full collective and flair to cushion your landing.
Did it a bunch of times at Ft. Rucker. -
auto rotation ain't fun. lol
it's more of a semi-controlled crash, sort of.
been there done that. -
Their trajectory seems to be more straight down . Take piper cub or what im familiar with a Citabaria they'll glide for a while depending on altitude and air temperature. .Sons Hero and Frank Speak Thank this.

From what I've seen you post previously, I never would have pegged you as a WO. Pleasantly surprised would be a slight understatement. LolFrank Speak and Opus Thank this.

Yeah. In a helicopter you have a very limited time to do the right thing and figure out where you're going to land. But you don't just fall out of the sky if you loose power. Now, if you loose your main rotor, you're dead.broke down plumber, dwells40, Sons Hero and 1 other person Thank this.

I already have fixed wing and instrument rated. My favorite pilot quote is:
“Every time you fly you’re going to crash. You just hope they’re all controlled.”broke down plumber, Flat Earth Trucker, dwells40 and 5 others Thank this.
