I just got my CDL and finish my long, perhaps too long, course Nov 20. The one company I like so far the most is based out of here in Miami/S. Florida and thus gets back every week (10 days most) which I like because they would allow flexibility in my schedule and that may be important. The pay seems fine but they are Team and I've heard Team driving is not so popular with a lot of folks. I wouldn't mind trying it since I need experience and the miles are there, but I don't want to hate it and switch companies so quickly either. The last part is that they take up to 12 weeks to get into a 2nd Seat position which seems a bit long to me.
My question is what should a new CDL driver normally expect in the first three months for pay, how long is training usually once hired for a NEWB, and what is the good and bad of Team vs. Solo?

    Well, that's a loaded question.

First 3 months, 22cpm - 36 cpm. Depends on the company

Training, 0-12 months, typically 0-6 months.

    Team vs. Solo. Ummmmmmm.

If you're teaming with your wife or cherished family member, ITS GREAT!

If it's Mr Stinky that they pulled out of the pile, or a lease operator that needs you to make his truck payments and runs you to death without actually teaching you anything . . . Things can go real well or horribly wrong.

Best case scenario, and I have teamed with the wife for 8+ years now - it's hard on the body, you don't get adequate rest, you're never lonely - and I mean NEVER!, even if you feel like a bit of lonely time. Unless it pays good - and I mean 50cpm +, I think you're better off solo.

    My proverbial 2 cents. Cheers.

    JoeTruckerMIA Thanks this.
