Hi there, I am 24 years old and I live in Oklahoma. I am working on starting a new career in truck driving after working in a manufactering plant for the last 5.5 years. I dont have a cdl right now and I have tried every way I can to get one. I have tried to get state help, but apparently I made to much money at my last job. I cant get approved for a loan. I am the guy stuck in the middle, I dont make enough, but yet, I am not poor enough to get help and I dont have enough money to pay for schooling myself. So I started looking into company sponsored cdl training, you know, where they pay for your schooling and you have to drive for them for a year, or until contract ends. Well, I got hooked up with driver solutions to go to C1 school in texas to work for PAM TRANSPORT. I was gonna go to school in texas for 3 weeks and after that start training with PAM. While under contract i was going to make .25 cents/mile with no money down on tuition. Well I had to back out of that deal to take care of personal things. I called them back and they hooked me up with a subsidary out of OKC by the name of Choctaw Express. Under that contract for a year as a team driver, dedicated route, to texas and oklahoma, I would be making 14.5 cents/mile. I dont know about this. I am supposed to start school on JUNE 29th. The guy I talked to said I would be making more as a team driver than I would as a solo driver. But also he said that I would get to come home on weekends and as a solo driver I was going OTR. Should I take this opportunity and struggle through the first year, get my cdl and experience and then after my contract is up look for something better? Or does anyone else know how I could get my cdl without being obligated by a contract. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

The pay seems a bit low but the hometime seems good. Most starting pay I see is about a dime more per mile though. I'm looking at Central and Stevens as a starting point for me. You won't get the home on weekends thing but the pay is better elsewhere.

If they're willing to run you and your co-driver hard. Take the deal.

What you are NOT seeing within this forum, are the drivers who are being forced to take pay cuts. And the companies that are reducing start pay to levels not seen in years.

I know it's happening at some major companies, through friends. But I'm refraining from comment, as I do not work there, and it would only lead to a firestorm on a thread.

    So for now...consider splitting .29 with a co-driver as a good option.

12 years ago I got 21cents per mile from Schneider after doing C1 in Indy. Try calling C1 directly. I feel this "driver solutions" may be getting to much of a cut. Google C1 in Indy, give them a call. See what they tell you and compare. Any time you use a third party to get what you need it always cost more or you get paid less.

Hey its me again, so I talked to the guy this morning and he said that drivers usually average 2200-2500 miles a week. He said I would get paid whenever the truck is rolling, while I am driving and while my partner is driving. What do you'll think? Thanks alot.

Driving team with a complete stranger is pretty much like rolling some dice; you might get lucky or you might crap out. If you and your teammate get along and have the same work ethic, you should be fine. Otherwise, you are in for a very unpleasant work situation. For instance, if you like rock music and your teammate likes country music, you will be forced to listen to music you don't like for hours on end. Likewise, if your teammate smokes or chews tobacco and you don't, you will be forced to deal with his habits. Little things like these might seem small to you now, but they can become very annoying when you are trapped inside a small truck.

There are public funded schools that you can go to and get government loans. Who said you can't get a loan, the banker for some private outfit that wants $7,000? It sounds like you've decided to work off your training ,though, so good luck with that and stay calm during the inevitable bad times. The more you stick with it, the easier it gets and life's what you make it.

While I can't speak for the original poster of this thread. I can speak about others I know in the same "bad" spot. And say with a degree of certainty, they have failed to view ALL available options. Simply because they don't like certain options available to them.

Some of those options would train them for a real career, and pay 100% of the cost. Including room and board.

I spent an hour speaking with a young man last night who needs $17k by August 1st for school. Yet refuses to face the reality, there is no help coming. He will have to do it himself.

The hard line he is taking, will force him to bag groceries or flip burgers for a living.
