The CDL training is $2500. or $3000 if you need housing. CDL training is 3 weeks..

That's a deal---3 weeks lodging (7 days/wk) for $500.

But there still will be no income during that period--can you stick that out?

1 week lodging- the 2 additional weeks you are on the road in the truck one on one with trainer -

2nd week OTR
3rd week city driving

Call them and they will clear it up for you.

Squire Transportation prepares, trains, and develops new drivers with the knowledge and skills required to pass the state skills test and obtain a class "A" CDL. Once a trainee has obtained the CDL, Squire provides trainees with a qualified Knight mentor to assist the trainee in his or her professional development. During the training period, the trainee improves driving skills, learns the non-driving skills, and gains the knowledge to be a successful professional driver.

Applicants are screened, tested, and DOT qualified prior to attending the Squire CDL course. Trainee applicants must obtain a CDL Instruction Permit from the state in which they reside before attending the course. When qualified by Squire to begin training, individuals become Trainee Employees and earn a salary while training on the Range and Road. An agreement will be signed authorizing Squire Transportation to make payroll deductions for training expenses after the trainee has progressed to a solo driver until the training expenses are fully repaid.

Week 1 - Range Training

Range training consists of 40 hours of instruction during four week days. Classroom and secured range pad training at Squire's facility in Phoenix, AZ will allow trainees to learn basic knowledge and to practice off- road skills necessary to pass the CDL test. One qualified range instructor will be assigned to train and evaluate 3-4 trainees on the range. Trainees will learn and practice the following off-road skills during the first week of training:

Equipment pre-trip inspection, backing a tractor, visual search, backing a tractortrailer, 45 degree dock/offset, parallel parking, and serpentine maneuvers.

Maneuvering skills with a tractor including starting engine, scanning instruments, proper shifting, steering positions, mirror checks, rpm / range control, progressive shifting, double clutch, braking, right and left hand turns and setting the parking brake.

Maneuvering skills while driving a combination vehicle including equipment control, proper coupling, backing, visual search, shifting, turning, space and speed management and hazard perception.

Weeks 2 and 3 - Road Training

Welcome to the "Real World" as a professional commercial driver. After successful completion of range training, trainees will be assigned to train and drive on-the-job with a Squire Mentor for approximately two weeks. Trainees will be running loads with mentor between customer locations and will experience life on the road as a commercial driver. The mentor will continue to provide the trainee with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the road portion of the CDL test. Daily progress evaluations will be made during the two weeks on the road. Trainees will learn and practice the following basic skills and develop the following basic knowledge while training on the road:

Introduction to safe driving techniques: Training includes skip and shift recovery, visual and traffic checks, speed/space management, lane control, changing lanes, merging and exiting freeways, and the correct use of signals and horn.

Basic skills to inspect and operate a tractor-trailer safely: Training includes pre-trip inspection, completion of required documentation, backing, vehicle control, visual search, progressive shifting, and communication.

Advanced techniques of control and safe driving while developing driving proficiency: Training includes uphill start and roll back, up and down hill up-shift, up and down hill down-shift, curve and passing control, space management, extreme driving conditions, speed management and hazard perception.

Examinations and Grading Process

Trainees are evaluated daily on their progress during classroom, range, simulator and road training. Trainees are required to pass daily CDL training requirements to complete the state skills tests with 80% accuracy or better. State skills examinations include:

Straight line backing

Pre-trip inspection

Basic control skills

Road test

Squire Transportation contracts with third party CDL examiners to evaluate and test trainees to pass range and skills tests. Squire trainees will use the same tractor and 53' trailer length they have been pulling on the road for two weeks to pass the State CDL test. Trainees with state test scores below 80% during the first attempt may try again the following day upon approval of Squire Management.

Completion certificate A certificate of completion from Squire will be provided to trainees who successfully complete the CDL and Squire training programs. Payment of all training and other amounts owed by the trainee must be completed prior to obtaining the completion certificate.

You are now ready to proceed to Squire Transportation for driver training and Knight Transportations finishing program!

I can see 'skinnying' down from the usual 4 wks to 3 wks, as my last week was spent waiting or testing..but at the AZ State DMV---not a 3rd party CDL (as Knight uses). Also shorter school time is why it costs $2500 and not $3000+ as most CDL schools.

tirednaz: Since Squire started at the same time I left over 4 yrs ago, where is their 'testing pad' and facility located at? The old Roadstar area? Or possibly up front at the Knight term where used to park trailers for sale? Or did Knight buy the open land next door (east)?

Also I already have my DOT Exam and Permit - so there is a week of class time saved as well-

And for the next several weeks I am going to do more studying on my own to learn the air brakes test and Pre Trip from the CDL Manual, Videos and other books- So I will hopefully catch on very quickly when I get to do it hands on. Than I can concentrate more on practicing driving skills.

Must of bought the acreage next door, as east of the main was parking, fuel pumps, and trailer wash...

Since using a 3rd party CDL tester, shud also be easier with more 'grace.' 2 ppl in my class of 8 had to retest after initially failing their AZ State DMV driving test, which added a couple more days of practicing for them prior to retesting..

What the Knight ad called "3. Basic control skills" was what the AZ State DMV tested as slaloming between cones backwards, slot parking as in backing at a right angle into a 'hole....which are all 'tricks' not just skills, and the most important part of driver training is out on the road and delivering freight!
