Basically a cop called the tow truck for me, which I had no problem with him doing since I had no phone signal where I was at.
So the tow truck gets there and pulls me on to a part of the road where I could gain traction again(I was empty)
I ask the wrecker guy how much it will be an he ignores me. Then proceeds to hook up the truck n pull me out. It took about 5 minutes.
I'm about 2 miles from the shipper so we meet there to finish everything
My company is taking forever to get the information needed, wrecker guy is getting irritated. After about 30 minutes he tells me I have 5 minutes before he takes everything with him. I tell him I just got off the phone with my company and they needed to know what the cost was before they can give me a reference number to give to him. He finally tells me it's $800 right now, in another 5 minutes it'll be $1000. I ask him how much is it an hour he says $450
I kid you not, around 2 minutes after this exchange he gets out n tells me they gave him his reference number and he's good.
So today my company sends me an in voice(I lease) and the total charge was $1400 with 3 hours of labor??
I'm kinda confused by this. Should I do anything or let it go?
Also what can I bring with me to avoid getting stuck in snow again
I was stuck in the snow recently and now ran across a problem

There it is; the reason the tow trucker is hated.
I Would have yanked you out and said 450, and went on my merry way. but no; gotta get every last drop of blood.
"It's your company paying so who cares???" Well, I do.
Robbers that use a hook instead of a gun.
So, on paper invoice, they listed 3 hours labor? That's fraud.
They lied. Hope U got that cops information.
He can testify to magistrate how long you were there.
Then they get the 450 they earned.
Sure there will be "just pay it and move on" comments,
but it isnt the money, (YES, IT IS,) its the principle of the thing.
My opinion is if he worked 3 hours getting you hooked up, and keeping trailer from flopping over, and had to side pull it
w/2 trucks, etc. YES, pay the man.
But a simple hook and tug to traction, no way.alds, nredfor88, SoulScream84 and 8 others Thank this. -

Just re-read this and a question;
The two miles to the shipper, was that on the hook, or did you drive there?
Two variables here could make it 1400.
One, police calls are billed at a different rate.
Two, towed in or drove to shipper.Last edited: Feb 19, 2021

Tow truck drivers that work with tractor-trailers are well known for padding bills.
Company I once worked for, a driver pulled over on the shoulder which was paved. This was during a blizzard. He looked at his road atlas for a minute, then tried to pull back on the road. Truck wouldn't move, due to ice. Company called tow truck company they had a contract with. That company was busy and farmed it out to another company. That company showed up and pulled the truck approximately 20 or 30 feet to get the truck drives back on the road. Then he refused to unhook unless he was paid $5000.00 and yes, the company had to pay it.Trucker61016, Rideandrepair and The_Great_Corn Thank this. -
Don't want to stir the pot, but if you're local to this area, and can find the jurisdiction info, and want to file a report and have it heard in front of Magistrate, and the officer will corroborate that you were gone as soon as you were freed up, U may have a case. Companies that have predatory practices count on you not standing up, or being from out of town, and not complaining to the law. Yes, they set the rate, and "We can charge whatever we want to," but they lied, and fraudulently padded hours on bill. Fraud.
That just pixxes me off, and gives all tow truckers a bad name.Canadianhauler21, TheLoadOut, xsetra and 4 others Thank this.
