Do you have to pay IFTA on toll roads i.e. PA turnpike?

Yes you pay IFTA on toll roads. NY is the only state that I know of that will give credit on IFTA.

NY: the Thruway is exempt from NYS HUT, not ifta.

Huh. When I would turn in NY thruway toll receipts to my carrier, I would get a credit on my IFTA statement or so I thought. Maybe Ill have to dig some out and look at it again.

What about PA turnpike, OH/IN toll, do I still have to pay IFTA on toll roads in those states?

    Ifta on all miles
Toll roads are a separate expense

Ny hut is another separate expense. You pay on all miles driven in ny except for toll road miles.

    Make sense?

TallJoe, mitmaks and Ruthless Thank this.

IFTA on all non-exempt miles. Does not matter if it is a toll road EXCEPT for the Mass Turnpike. For the Mass Turnpike IFTA exemption, read here on page 9: http://www.mass.gov/dor/docs/dor/forms/miscform/pdfs/ifta-bklt.pdf

@Ruthless is correct. NY Thruway miles exempt from HUT, not IFTA.

There are other IFTA exempt miles, but they are rare. They include things like some Native American reservations, private oil company roads, private agriculture roads, private logging roads. Also, any miles driven in Alaska, Hawaii, DC, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territory, Nunavut, or Mexico.

You add in all miles (even exempt miles) into your "totals" calculations or else your MPG will be wrong and mess the whole return up. But then you can deduct out the Non-IFTA miles from the money calculation.

    PE_T and Oxbow Thank this.

I always thaught that paying ifta on toll roads is double taxation and should be challenged in the court of law.

I agree, because we are almost always told that it will only be a toll road, or a toll bridge until it's paid for, but of course it's always a toll road/bridge even after its paid for.
