Unfortunately you are starting training at THE SLOWEST time of year. There are a number of drivers, Swift and others, that are sitting in Phoenix looking for a load right now... myself included.
The first quarter is always the slowest quarter.
im a student and mad enough to put in a app at mcdonalds

Im in larado...tons of trucks sittn ..waiting....no more vans unless u r a flat...for now anyway I hear...
They did escort a guy outta his truck today...and the cops. Were called. Didnt hear why tho... -
hauling those vans in these dry vans are a pain. they sent a towtruck driver to unload them and he was about 240-250 and couldnt get between the side to get the straps off. had to get a skinny driver to help him.

Why wouldn't they just open up the back doors of the sprinter van and walk up to the driver seat and back it out of the trailer?
-
they have to undo the straps on front tire first. the straps are nailed down with 2by4s. straps on back tire too,but they are wasy to get too.
scottied67 Thanks this. -
I did one of those loads.
There is like 1 foot between the side of the van and the wall of the trailer. I couldn't have made it in, and I am not really that fat.
The guys that load the van are skinny little guys.
I was lucky in that I t-called the load that was going into Canada.
But if I wasn't, well, it would sit there until someone skinny enough came in to get it out. -
Enjoying a Jaegermeister on ice, enjoying this thread, and reminiscing my year of hell with swift.
What can I say driver (op), welcome to trucking, this situation you're in, will be common and more frequent when you get your own truck. Wait til you get stuck in Laredo for three days in 110 swampy hot weather!
My recommendation is to stick it out, get a hotel room, rest up, get a steak, watch a porno/movie whatever....it'll be over and you're back on the road. Keep the faith hang in there -
working in service industry is hard period, including mcdonalds, average pay 7.15-8.00 an hour up to 40 hours a week. Must be available 7 days week
after 40 you'll be sent home, if business is slow you'll be sent home early. A good raise is .10 cents an hour if any raises come at all. Average life expectancy for a employee 3 mouths with a 400 percent turn rate. If fast food is like trucking then drivers make more for the agervation. When i worked at mcdonalds i averaged 400 take home every two weeks. There were many variables but i averaged around 10,000 for the year. After factering all the stress and headaches its a difficult way tomake a living -
Good luck getting anything over 29 hours/week in McDonald's or other fast food places now. Most places are limiting hours so the employees can be considered part-time. They don't want to provide insurance when the new laws (postponed for a year) kick in.
