Why do you think this is BS?

You do not believe there are such companies out there?

I know there are such companies out there, I also know that Schneider is not one of them.

No school OR experienced driver is going to take a newbie and make him as good as 40 year veteran with a gazillion miles and no tickets, accidents, or spills. So much depends on the level of instruction AND the amount of effort a student is willing to put into his/her training. Remember, that 40-year veteran driver started somewhere him/herself -- and probably everything learned wasn't from an instructor. There's just no way you can teach 40 years' worth of experience.

Personally, just as I dislike the way some truckers lump all four-wheelers into the same mold, I don't like how everyone is attacking this guy.

None of us have any business judging his school's training UNLESS WE HAVE EXPERIENCED IT. I don't doubt there are crappy CDL mills out there, but I cannot believe there aren't quality schools as well.

Now that I've said my piece, I will return to my cave. :biggrin_25525:

There are some that will disagree.

My question on the BS was the OTR in a day cab with motel out of his pocket.

When they do not follow State guidelines they are shut down, and all student who graduate from such schools have their licenses revoked until they are put through a skills test by the DOT.

Ask anyone who has gone through the Swift school in Millington, TN in the past 3 years.

Its real simple, CDL schools teach new drivers one thing and one thing only, how to pass a DMV CDL test. That is it. My close friend is a truck school teacher and this is what he tells all of his students when they are done with truck school. You came to truck school to learn how to pass your DMV CDL test, now get a job at a company that has a training program and learn how to be a truck driver. Now copy and paste that. Where's RIckG, iam looking forward to his reply to this thread.

You're blowing smoke about safety to avoid another issue - churning out students while tens of thousands of drivers are getting laid off . How about data you have access to ? Get in touch with your graduates from the last 6 months then let us know what percentage are actually working at the moment . You say you are here for advice . For what , to help you place students you can't find jobs for ?
You deserve nothing from us with your attitude toward truckers. Bubba has to go to your school because he's too stupid to train at anything else . You say jobs will open up because there are always truckers going to jail . Do you telll your students that to encourage them ? I don't think that many drivers go to jail . Try finding something that opens more jobs . How about drivers dying ? I bet more drivers die every year than get arrested . You could show your students that video of the trainee that flipped that rig on Donner killing himself and the trainer . That creates a problem getting a truck though .

They aren't attacking me sir, they are attacking schools in general, and they would do it whether I was here or not. I'm happy that my voice can be heard. Not a voice for schools but a voice for good schools and quality training.

And, while I don't agree with their general views regarding CDL schools, I do believe that these guys could effect change in a very positive way, in fact they have.

In the last 2 days I have made disuation part of my interview process. In truth, it helps. Anyone who is weak at heart, uncertain, or not serious about what it is they want to do are easily dispatched and those that truly want to drive a truck can't be convinced otherwise.

On another note, I got a call from a student that graduated at the end of December. He and his son came through training together and both went to work with Werner Enterprises. The Dad is on a Sara Lee dedicated route running 2400 miles per week at .33cpm. I was a little surprised at the mileage pay because Werner quotes .26cpm to start... maybe just the difference of the dedicated route. The son is still on a truck with his trainer. Apparently Werner's answer to the economy is to keep some of their drivers in training longer. At $400/wk and regular hometime, he's not complaining for now but obviously anxious to get going on his own. He's only 21 so the extra training is probably doing him a world of good anyway.

Get in touch with your graduates from the last 6 months then let us know what percentage are actually working at the moment .

I will work on getting this information, but I am one of the first people to call when they decide to leave their job. Likewise, I am one of the first people they call to thank when they are happy with their jobs.

You say you are here for advice . For what , to help you place students you can't find jobs for ?

No, I don't need help finding qualified students a job. What I would like to provide them is more and better options in the trucking industry.

You deserve nothing from us with your attitude toward truckers.

My attitude toward truckers, I am a trucker. I'm not driving at the moment but I have nothing but respect for my profession and believe it is a good and honest way to earn a living.

Bubba has to go to your school because he's too stupid to train at anything else .

My attitude toward truckers? I don't believe it takes a rocket scientist to drive a truck but I do believe it takes a semi-intelligent person to be a successful truck driver. If Bubba is in fact too stupid to do anything else, I certainly don't want him in my school.

You say jobs will open up because there are always truckers going to jail . Do you telll your students that to encourage them ? I don't think that many drivers go to jail .

Driver's have many reasons why they lose or give up their jobs, usually these are stupid decisions, arrests, DUIs and yes even jail. See the thread in Trucking jobs "Reno Driver Needs Help" for another example.

Try finding something that opens more jobs . How about drivers dying ? I bet more drivers die every year than get arrested . You could show your students that video of the trainee that flipped that rig on Donner killing himself and the trainer .

I do not make light of anyone else's tragedy and I certainly don't use it as a recruiting tool. But, we do use some pretty harsh videos to encourage safe driving practices, as do most trucking companies. These videos are produced by JJKeller if I'm not mistaken.

That creates a problem getting a truck though.

I'm not sure what this sentence means.

You are 210% correct my friend. It is just like any other course at a school, the student is being trained for his final exam. In this case, it's going to the CDL exam and hopefully passing it.
