Some people always want someone else to do the hard work finding stuff out.
If someone did refer a company & it wasn't a good fit, then they had someone else to blame.
Alot of people don't want to take responsibility for what they do.plankton, FlaSwampRat and buddyd157 Thank this. -
I never went otr. Yes I did put my two weeks in, I'll stay local but I'm not sure what I want to do. I like my job a lot I just want day hours and they don't have any without merchandising so I gotta roll. I got an offer from a tank company that was pretty good and I'm going to a paving/excavation place my buddy works at tomorrow. They start you out in a dump truck hauling bobcats and smaller equipment until you learn securement and show that you can get in and out of job sites without tearing anything up then they move you up to oversize on a lowboy hauling excavators and highway pavers...Sounds kinda neat. Then Thursday I'm going to a open house at performance food group to see what that's all about.Vic Firth, bryan21384 and Lonesome Thank this.

Fact: I know of a CDL school where 9 out of 10 graduates go straight into home daily local jobs. They aren't getting lucky, but making their luck by doing their research and taking the initiative. You are correct that jobs of this type are not readily available everywhere, but if you're within commuting distance of a good sized city then they probably are available. Fact check: Which LTL companies require OTR experience. I don't know of any.Vic Firth, Lonesome and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

Yes 1 CDL school. I love it when people have 1 sample size and its supposed to be a common thing nationwide lol. Its pretty irrelevant if you're not in that area, and most people who get in trucking these days are broke anyway so they're not going to travel to that school. Anyway, I am not saying its impossible, but it's not always likely. I used to work for 7up/Snapple and there were a few guys who never went OTR. It's only so many of those jobs out there. Many of those guys ain't leaving those jobs that easy

all these lovely facts how can these all be wrong lol
Anyways basicly it's all boils down to insurance requirements is what they have it based on more and less. then if they want skilled drivers or not, but some don't care for OTR or local as experience but each company is different some require certain skills and thank god too example: have some experiance with tankers before hauling fuel, I do however would like see more people training options in this but there are ways around this of course. most LTL I know require one thing but leads to multiple which is endorsements double, triple and hazmat and tanker some will even let you earn your cdl and become a driver from dock worker and make good money. But there is more work then no-touch dry van so there is that.
The OTR is nice for some bad for most that's how it's always been we have a and abundance of drivers people assume there's a driver shortage there's not there a shortage of drivers willing drive for OTR companies they dislike some get out altogether find better opportunities, I recommend plumbing, electrical, maybe road construction even if your unsure your talents you can start as that guy who uses a stop sign for a follow escort car maybe get up to blademan one day.bryan21384 Thanks this. -
I wasn't knocking OTR... I can see an appeal to OTR driving and I think I'd even like to try it at some point, when the kids are grown. I was just pointing out that a new driver does not necessarily have to start out OTR.Lonesome Thanks this.

There are a handful of cdl schools nearby and they all have graduates getting hired on with the larger LTL companies right out of school. The one school I mentioned was the one I attended. We agree... ones location determines how likely it is.bryan21384 Thanks this.
