    It depends on who you ask. I've been told to only deal with my dispatcher, but I'm also in the pump division and I think that's a pump division thing. It doesn't matter where you live for the pump division, your home terminal will be Winter Haven.

    This is one of those areas where I don’t want to speak out of turn on policy. We are assigned a “driver manager,” who you can deal with on every single load, every issue that comes up, etc. Some drivers do it that way. Personally, I contact the terminal that is over the region I am currently in. If I deliver in the NE, I call the Pennsylvania terminal to find out what they want me to do next. If I’m on the West Coast, I call California. If I’m around New Mexico or somewhere under their umbrella, I call Clovis. If I’m in a state that Winter Haven runs, I call them.

    When it comes to getting PO numbers for truck washes, scheduling home time, notifying the company about anything personal (upcoming vacations, etc) I call my DM. Throughout the years I’ve worked here, they’ve done it different ways. Some people like the dedicated, deal with only one person for everything, some don’t. For someone new, I would think the “deal with one person” is the easiest route. A lot of us, who have been here a while and have been around the different terminals, have everyone’s phone number, cell numbers, etc. contact the terminal we’re currently in. It eliminates unnecessary phone calls, enables us to get around quicker, etc. If you stay in one region all the time or just want to deal with one person 24/7, technically, to my knowledge, that is the way it’s setup and structured.

    In the driver handbook I got at orientation it maps our the country and shows you which terminal covers particular zones. That's how I determine who to call for my next load or to update ETAs etc. This was before we had driver managers. Even with the DMs I still contact the terminal for that region and haven't been told I should do it any other way.

    My DM is based at the Bensalem terminal and has no knowledge of what is in California or how they run the customers out that way. As tanker82 mentioned, my DM is my first point of contact for hometime etc and also for any loads originating in the NE. I don't bother them with anything outside of that.

    Some questions here for all the drivers of IRT...
    In your own personal experience and if you can please give some examples I would greatly appreciated.

    Is there any period during the course of the year (months) that you experience a particular slow down in your regional driving area or if you are a OTR driver what months during the year do you experience a slow down and what strategies do you implement personally to lets say survive those slower months?

    Note: The reason I ask these questions is because I understand that not all IRT drivers are regional or OTR drivers and some live in different parts of the country.

    I can't say that I notice a seasonal slowdown. I do a lot of juice in the NE, and supposedly during school holidays there is less being shipped to the bottling plant that we mainly supply in Canada. The main reason I am not running as much as before is because other carriers are doing runs for that customer.

    If there aren't any juice loads to Canada I usually wind up hauling dairy out of VA and MD going to Florida and Alabama. Once empty they usually deadhead me back up to Bensalem.

    During Cranberry season we load quite a bit of it in Quebec Canada. We have customers for cranberry in Florida, California and Washington State. I will occasionally take a Florida load all the way through, but the West Coast loads I drop for someone else to deliver.

    I have to say they are pretty good about getting me miles somehow. I am making less than I was this time last year (mainly because of other carriers doing what we used to), but I am still doing ok.

    I could post the miles from the past couple months, but I had some unplanned time off due to family circumstances. I can still post those if you really want me to.

    I keep a spreadsheet in my iPad Notes app where I log my payroll deposits. I list the month, date, and amount of each deposit.

    Each month has a “total” column at the bottom that shows my total net income for the particular month. In 2024, there are 8 “total columns” on my spreadsheet so far, since we’re not finished with September yet. When I list those 8 totals starting with the highest and ending with the lowest, this is the order:

    March - 5 paychecks
    July - 4 paychecks
    June - 4 paychecks
    February - 4 paychecks
    May - 5 paychecks
    August - 4 paychecks
    January - 4 paychecks
    April - 4 paychecks

    I'm not sure if that helps you, but those are my 8 months for this year listed in highest earnings to lowest earnings as an OTR driver. Looking at that list, it’s hard to point at a particular season and say that one is slower than the other. Various home times throughout the year affect things, too. For example, August might have been really busy for everyone else, but since I took 10 days off at the end of July and didn’t return until August 6th, that particular month is lower on the list for me.

    To answer your other question, I live below my means and keep an emergency fund for when things happen unexpectedly, such as my truck breaking down and going to the shop for a few days, or getting caught up in a bad part of the country where I end up with low miles that week, etc.
