I never laid a hand on my kids. You don't have to hit a kid to call it discipline. Teaching went hand in hand with discipline. All grown now. No arrests, no drug problems, just normal working people. Sissies? I have a boxer, and two taekwondo black belts.

Momma grounded my brother and I for a month once. No friends, no bicycles, no outside basically. After less than a week she couldn't take it any longer and kicked us out of the house. Lol

As to the OP.... that's hard to comment on without knowing the full back story, but I know the look on that kids face is not something I'd ever want to see looking back at me from my own children.

I spanked my children when they were growing up, the same as my parents did to me. It helped to understand that life had consequences. Discipline is 180 degrees different from abuse though.

We live in a society that gets more worked up over animal abuse then child abuse.

Discipline is seen in 2 ways in this country.
    1) a route to good moral character thru punishment.
    2) a branch of knowledge requiring specialization, training thru teaching and dedication.

Good discipline does not exclude some type of punishment (you have to lose to win). However, good discipline ALWAYS includes an explanation of WHY you are being punished.

Fail on the "why" and discipline is out the window. It's random at that point. Unpredictable. Prone to breed resentment & maladjustment.

you handled your discipline your way, i did mine, my way.

it's the way it was for MY generation to discipline.

yeah, i had that happen to me. my grand dad caught me smoking one of his throw aways...

he made me smoke all of his as well, they were those hand rolled bent outta shape, Italian stinky cigars

thankfully though, he only had 3 left.....

but he made me go to the store and buy him a fresh box with my "piggy bank" money, that he so easily broke open for me..

Was that discipline? Surely you learned something - but do you think you were treated fairly? We're you taught WHY you shouldn't do that - or were you just forced to smoke cigars because somebody thought you had to, to learn a lesson?
