After Virgin Mobile robbed me of my virginity, I've always went with unlimited talk, text, and internet. Why people try to save a nickel tracking down wifi or hotspots is beyond me.

 

Well... the easiest time to add insult to injury is when you’re signing someone’s cast.

 

I'm cheap, but the one thing I learned not to scrimp on is phone service. If you travel and work in a limited area, get any phone service you like with good connections there. If you are OTR your choices are limited to ATT & Verizon towers. The way you can save money is get access to ATT or Vzw by using a MVNO. They buy ATT and Vzw access by the rail car and then sell it to you MUCH cheaper than ATT & Vzw. You can get unlimitedtalk and text many ways. You can get large amounts of data cheap. Visible is Verizon's discount brand. There are no stores, no humans to talk to, just connection to the Vzw network for $25/mo if you sign up for Party Pay. Party pay s where you and 3 others share a $100/mo unlimited everything paqckage. You don't provide the 3 other people, know the 3 other people or coordinate payments with the 3 other people. Visible takes care of all of that. You just pay $25/ mo on credit card and thatis it.

Xfinity Mobile also resells Vzw service. for half what Vzw charges. The only catch, if you don't already subscribe to either Xfinity cable TV or Xfinity internet at home then you are charged an extra $20 per month. But if you are going to have either of those at your house, then you just pay$45 per month for unlimited talk, text, and data. Data may be slowed after 22GB. If you use your phone as a hotspot hotspot speeds are 5Mbs.

 

Visible doesn't prevent or slow hotspot speeds. The downside to Visible, besides EVERYTHING must be done online or via chat, is they only support a limited number of phone models. This allows them to need virtually no customer service overhead.
US Mobile is another well-regarded MVNO. I think it's $30/mo for unlimited. IIRC they stop your data at 30 or 50GB instead of slowing it.
I use Howard Forums for all things cellphone. They have lots of industry insiders and savvy users so you get some interesting items plus poorly-promoted cheap plan info.

 

just use PDANet+ and you don't have any issues with tethering. I've used 1TB of data w/o ever being capped in a month. Because they don't know you are tethered.
