I have had an iPhone 3GS for a year and a half now and love it. The only problem I've had with it has been when charging it in the truck via my 140 watt inverter. Occasionally the error message "Charging is not supported with this device." I'm using the USB port on my inverter and the cord from Apple. I used to have a knock off USB cable I bought at a Pilot, and when I used it I'd get the same error message previously mentioned a lot more often. Also at that time I was using an older 100 watt inverter. While at Walmart one day I saw the Apple USB and bought it as well as the inverter I now have. I didnt get the error message for several weeks after buying those two things and thought I'd found a solution. Alas it would seem as though I haven't. A trip down Google lane led me to replace the USB originally and the old inverter was just wore out and frequently got hot. The fact that I don't ever get the error message when the USB is plugged in to my laptop or using the wall adapter at home.

Anyone with an iPhone ever have any issues like this? The last thing I want to do is brick my lifeline.

Try charging your phone through your laptop...USB connection from laptop to your phone!

*Advice I got from the resident teenager...so it actually works with my phone!*

That would work great if I had a laptop stand.

I've already had to replace one LCD on this laptop.

Methinks leaving it on while trucking across the country would end up costing me another one.

I have to charge my 4g off a cheap inverter using 120v. I had salt water on my floor board and the business end of the 12v charger ended up soaking in the puddle as I realized after plugging it in and corroding the phone. I was able to clean it with a toothpick and rubbing alcohol but now it won't charge off the car charger but luckily the 120 still works. Theres a company in Dallas called The Cellphone Doctor and they will replace anything on the Iphone while you wait. Mine will cost $75 bucks to fix but I'm in no hurry as my current charge set up works fine. Their must be some money in fixing these newer smart phones as I see cell phone repair places all over the place now.

Gotta have a good charge set up as the Iphone has a laughable battery life. Standby is no problem but once you start playing around it goes quick.

    Scarecrow03 Thanks this.

Leave it on and plugged in while you sleep...for the initial charge...then strap the laptop to the passenger seat while driving...air cushioned ride after all!:biggrin_2558:

I got a small 200w inverter to use in the cab for my phone and shaver, I've never had a problem with it charging phones since about '02.

There is a chance that your inverter is modified sine wave and the iPhone will only work off of pure sine wave... just a guess. Years ago it used to be a problem with laptops and other things, not sure about now.

One other thought... Wal Mart has a 3 outlet cig lighter/power source that has a USB charging port, it's cheap and might work.

Don't stress it I am using all Apple supported charging cords.
I use the one that plug into the lighter. I get the same message every now and then.
Just unplug it then plug it back in
    takes 2 whole seconds.
Message gone and it continues charging

That's what I've been doing, and so far haven't "bricked" my phone.

    Thanks y'all.
