I always flag Pretrip and Post trip and combine the time with fueling, been doing this for many years, never had a problem at any state with how I show it.
As far as the physical inspection, it takes what it takes you (I) do not cut it short, I may not show it since the elogs, since most of the pre trip I conduct is from outside the cab before I actually start it up, so the elog reflects the time involved while checking the air and brake bleed down, and charging system, you know the in cab stuff.
As far as required time to be shown my understanding is that it is no longer required unless there is a problem, but I recommend showing a min of 15 minutes per day for inspections.
I have had a couple recent full DOT's at Banning Westbound, and ask the desk officer (CHP) and according to him it is not required to show a time deduction any longer, but did not give me a vc section. and passed both by the way with flying colors, driver, tractor, and trailer. -
I have not operated a CMV since Dec of 2012. I have not operated ANY vehicle since April 2016. In the summer of 2016 I lost my CDL and now only have a state issued ID card. During my driving career I never felt like I needed the FMCSA or a State rule or enforcement officer to stay safe. I'm telling every driver reading this to not put their CMVs out on the nations highways until you have gave it at least a quick look. Doing a pre/post trip inspection while not legally required is one thing. However operating a CMV with something defective is operating it illegally and it don't matter if you know it or not. By the act of entering a public highway you have according to the rules deemed your vehicle safe. Some of the topics bantered about in these forums make me shake my head. This is one of them. What the hell difference does it make if a pre/post trip is not legally required. NONE whatsoever! I also don't give a flying crap how long you log or if you even log doing it. That part of this discussion is non sequitur to me. In my years of driving and I will go out on a limb and say most of the drivers in here that have more then 15 years driving should agree, I have found air leaks, busted or bad lights, flat tires, missing or loose lug nuts and a trailer tag almost off or missing at least once during a post trip. Why would someone want to wait till the next morning to inspect only to have to wait on the company for service. As to logging guess what. If you did start your day that 14 hour clock is running and I know from experience you can count on at least a 3 hour wait AVERAGE for someone to come out and fix your truck. Do these inspections. A good safe driver does NOT need a dang regulation to stay safe.
